Smalls did Big things for Eastern Guilford

Capricia Smalls was sitting in a doctor’s office when her basketball mortality flashed before her eyes.

Then a sophomore at Eastern Guilford, she knew her recently torn knee ligament meant an end to her season. But when a doctor told her it wouldn’t be possible for her to play again, her reaction was understandable.

“I was crying,” Smalls said. “My dad was crying, my mom was crying.”

Thank goodness for second opinions.

While guiding Eastern Guilford to a Mid-State 3-A Conference crown as a senior, Smalls was back where she felt most comfortable.

With her knee mended, and her mind as strong as ever, Smalls powered the Wildcats by knocking down silky jumpers and setting up teammates.

On the strength of that effort, which also led Eastern Guilford to capturing the Mid-State 3-A Conference regular-season title, Smalls can add Times-News All Region Girls’ Basketball Player of the Year to an already solid basketball résumé.
