Ken Ferrer allowed one run over 5.2 innings and Thomas Girdwood slammed the door shut to earn his Southern Conference-record-tying 29th career save as the Elon Phoenix defeated the 20th-ranked North Carolina Tar Heels 4-3 in front of 1,839 fans from Latham Park on Tuesday night. Elon (20-10) picked up its third victory of the season over a top-25 program, matching the most wins over the top-25 since the start of the 1999 campaign.

  1. Elon’s 4-0 vs. the ACC this year with wins over UNC, Wake, and two against Clemson (top 5 at the time).

    Though it was a slow start for Elon…before ringing up ACC wins they got swept by The Citadel at home. Now, Elon’s making up for that at 20-10. If they gravy train of ACC wins continues and they to the high 30s or higher in wins, their season doesn’t depend as much on a SoCon Tournament title.

    SoCon’s a tough conference year in, year out. Their conference RPI (9th) is much higher than the Big Ten (16th) and on the heels of the Big East (8th). Only four of the 11 teams in conference aren’t in the top 100 RPI and 3 are in the top 30 RPI.
