  2. The fall of Grimsley Baseball has been faster than I expected since the coaching change. Anybody that’s plugged in, please give me some scoop

  3. Most observers feel it is due to the young team and the fact that they had numerous injuries to their pitchers this year before the season even got started….

I have not been that close to the program this year, but that is what I have heard from many Grimsley followers and it looked like Grimsley was showing more promise last year than they have been this year with those pitchers that were out….

Ryan Stoneman just came back yesterday for the first time based on what I was seeing…..He had a solid summer in 2009….

  4. Hey Rodger Dodger that is a good win for Southern Guilford. I have seen both ne and southern play this year. This score suprises me because southern should have definately out manned in this contest.

  5. can grimsley be young every year. whats up with that. it’s shame that a school that size can’t field a competitive team. there has to be more to the story. they use to be loaded year after year when i was coming up. whats up?

  6. Grimsley had a bunch of kids transfer in for a few years. Clint Moore, Rivenbark, carter, Sutphin, and a couple of others. That is not happening now. And some of the transfers, transferred out. Sutphin left for SWG and George Carter left for Northern. Even when they had the transfers they really only had one really good team. That team won the 1st 2 rounds of the playoffs including a win over a good West Forsyth team.

Greensboro Youth baseball is at it’s weakest. No good feeder programs. And lacrosse keeps growing. Look at another city school, Page. Some of teh same issues, just never had the transfers. And while Dudley is much improved, they lose a ton this year. That team is better thanks to hard work put in by men in the community as well as the kids.

They lost their top 2 pitchers to injuries before the year started. Then they lost a starting middle infielder to grades. They don’t have the depth to overcome that. But who does? Name a team out there that can recover from losing their top 2 pitchers.

Every week someone comes on here and asks the same question as if trying to stir something up. Grimsley is down on talent and young this year. They are not by themselves. It is what it is.

  7. Northeast can’t hit the Curveball. Thats what threw them off and was the game changing pitch. 11K’s

  8. Kevin,
Thanks for the post. While I am not a Grimsley parent, you are correct. Youth baseball in this community is at it’s lowest point ever and will gradually get lower this year, etc.. There are other sports like lacrosse and basketball that are competing for athletes in the spring and summer that limits the talent pool dramatically. In my opinion, baseball is a very difficult sport that requires a special skill set and lots more practice than people realize or are willing to allocate to their getting better. Most good baseball players are 2nd, 3rd, and 4th generation players who , in many cases, do play other sports (unlike many basketball players). The city schools ( and I say this because there is still a city/county mentality) are worse performers for many reasons, but there is definitely a difference— yes, that includes Dudley because they will be in a similar boat next year and are really only the 5th or even 6th best team in the county as we speak. Before the Grimsley team that was loaded with transfers ( not a shot at anyone by the way), they had not won anything since 1997 or so—even though their colt and palomino teams were very successful for years ( some may not agree with that either since a lot os SE, SG, and ragsdale players were involved with those teams also.
Anyway, the bottom line is that this will get worse and not better unfortunately. What will happen to youth baseball if the better local teams start playing together in some of the high leagues that allow teams to play as a team all summer? I shudder to think of that scenario!
Just giving fans of HS and youth baseball in this community something to think about.
    Eddie Willis

  9. Eddie, I think you are spot on with the Grimsley situation and city schools in general. It seems that Ashkinazy raised the bar for all, even if there were transfers (good players want to play for good coaches). Can we get him back? Others, please quit telling us about Grimsley’s injuries this year. Sounds like excuses.

  10. Andy,
Can you repost Mr. Willis’ comments where they will be seen? He really gets to the “heart of the matter” with many of his posts. He knows a lot about the overall athletic climate in this area, don’t you think? Is he an insider @ one of the county or city schools? Any ideas?

  11. I don’t know Mr. Willis or Dale Fulton or many of posters, but they do bring a special insight to our conversations and we plan to keep on posting their comments and welcome all of your responses on the different topics that show up throughout the day….
