GREENSBORO, N.C. – Guilford College’s baseball team slammed three home runs in an 11-8 home win over Montreat College Tuesday. The victory ended a seven-game losing streak and gave Guilford (14-20) a sweep of the season series with the Cavaliers (12-23).

After Adam Speas’ two-run single gave the guests a 2-0 first-inning lead, Guilford rookie Kent Peterson made his first college homer a memorable one. He hit a two-out, grand slam in the bottom first inning off of Cavaliers’ starter David Flanagan, which gave the Quakers a 4-2 edge.

Jordan Nelson’s fourth homer of the season, a three-run shot in the second inning, opened a 7-2 Guilford lead. Kyle Wooden belted his team-leading eighth homer of the year, a two-run shot in the fifth inning, which made it a 10-4 contest.

The Cavaliers rallied to within three by scoring two runs in the eighth and two runs in the ninth. Guilford’s Michael Blocher entered the game with two runners on the top of the ninth and after Montreat scored twice, he retired Jacob Suttles on a fly ball to center field with the bases loaded to end the game.

Peterson and Nelson both finished with two hits in the game, as did Guilford’s Jay Cox and Travis Starbuck. Wooden was 1-2 with three runs scored and two RBI. Sammy Stuart (1-3) earned his first win of 2010 with three innings in relief of starter Will James, who left the game after yielding four runs in four innings.

Montreat’s Dustin Bartlett had a game-high four hits, including a double and an RBI. Lucas Martin was 3-4 with three runs scored. Geno Sanchez doubled twice and had two RBI. Flanagan (1-1) took the loss after leaving the game in the second inning. Will Misenheimer fanned six in 3.2 innings of relief.

Guilford visits Lynchburg College Wednesday (4/14) at 3:00 p.m. in a game rescheduled from Feb. 28.
