Sullivan Award winner to be named tonight: Clint Moore(Grimsley HS) up for the honor

NEW YORK -Team USA ultramarathoner and lower-leg amputee Amy Palmiero-Winters of Hicksville, N.Y., on Wednesday evening was recognized for her athletic achievements, contributions to society and embodiment of the ideals of amateurism when she was named the winner of the 2009 AAU Sullivan Award as the nation’s top amateur athlete.

Accepting the award at the New York Athletic Club, Palmiero-Winters became the first USATF athlete to win the Sullivan Award since Michael Johnson in 1996. She joins other Sullivan Award winners from track and field such as Carl Lewis, Bruce Jenner, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Joan Benoit Samuelson, Mary Decker, Florence Griffith-Joyner, Rafer Johnson, Frank Shorter and Edwin Moses.

“To me, this means a lot,” said Palmiero-Winters, who wore a white mini-dress to show off her prosthesis and who attended Wednesday’s ceremony with her two children, friends and support crew. “It shows that what I do and how hard I try actually is making a difference. The people who believe in you and stand by you help you do better things.”

The AAU Sullivan Award goes to America’s Top Amateur Athlete…….

The field has been narrowed down to 6 extraordinary individual amateur athletes.

The award will be presented TONIGHT, 7:30pm, at the New York Athletic Club in New York City.

One of the finalists is Clint Moore from Grimsley High School and he’s the son of Kevan and Sharon Moore and the grandson of long-time local Greensboro Colt Baseball leaders, Larry and Patsy Moore….

Accomplishments: In 2009 Clint Moore was named to American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) NCAA Division I All-America Third Team and selected to ABCA Northeast Region First Team. He was one of just five Northeast Regional team members to be selected to the ABCA’s national All America team. Moore was one of 15 semifinalists for Brooks Wallace Award, presented annually to nation’s top shortstop by the College Baseball Foundation. This baseball player repeated as first team All-Patriot League selection, finished second in conference player of year voting, chosen to the All-Austin Regional Team and named honorable mention All-America by Ping! Baseball magazine. Clint was selected as the College Baseball Insider.com Northeast Player of the Week and Patriot League Player of the Week on strength of his torrid late-season stretch. He was also named to National All-star Lineup and gained Army Athletic Association Athlete of the Week honors based on those efforts. Clint authored one of most prolific offensive seasons in Army history; batted .395 with 18 doubles, five triples, 11 home runs, 58 runs scored and 65 runs batted in. Posted slugging percentage of .724 and on-base mark of .494 piled up 134 total bases, went 10-for-14 in stolen base attempts and registered a remarkable fielding percentage of .971. Clint helped Army set new team record for double plays (66), participated in 38 twin-killings from shortstop position, established a new single season school records for both multi-hit (25) and multi-RBI (20) games, batted safely in 43 of 53 outings, hit .378 with runners in scoring position and batted safely in 43 of 53 outings overall. His seasonal totals rank among Army single-season leaders in doubles (2nd), runs batted in (3rd), runs scored (3rd), home runs (4th), triples (5th) and base hits (6th) but ranked among national leaders in sacrifice flies.
