GREENSBORO, N.C. — Guilford College’s Alex Starbuck (Kernersville,
N.C./East Forsyth) earned Second Team *ESPN The Magazine* Academic
All-District III baseball honors for the second straight season Friday from
the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). CoSIDA members
nominated and selected the academic all-district teams.

The all-district squads are comprised of baseball/softball student-athletes from
Division II and III institutions in the five-state area from Virginia to
Florida. Nominees were starters or important reserves of sophomore academic
standing or above who maintained at least a 3.3 grade point average.

Starbuck, a 5-10, 170-pound outfielder, led the Quakers’ hitters with a
career-high .370 batting average over 36 games and won the team’s McBane
Hitting Award. The left-handed batter earned honorable mention All-Old
Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) recognition and tied the school record
with 17 doubles this season, which stands second among ODAC leaders through
games of Apr. 25. Starbuck also led Guilford with 51 hits and 29 runs
scored, both career highs, and had four homers and 24 runs batted in. He
totaled a team-high 17 multiple-hit contests and enjoyed a 13-game hitting
streak, Guilford’s longest of the season. The left-fielder went 4-for-6 with
two RBI in the Quakers’ Mar. 23 loss to Roanoke College and was 3-for-4 with
three doubles and a season-best five RBI in a Mar. 6 ODAC win over Emory &
Henry College.

A four-year starter, Starbuck completed his career as a .326 hitter with 14
homers and 87 RBI. He had 50 doubles in 146 games, the second-highest total
in school history. His 183 career hits rank ninth all-time at Guilford and
his 115 career runs stand 12th. Starbuck won Guilford’s 2010 English
Athletic Leadership Award, the school’s highest athletic honor, and will
graduate Saturday with a degree in psychology. He is a three-time Academic
All-ODAC selection.

Starbuck helped coach Nick Black’s ’02 club to a 14-23 overall record, 5-13
in the ODAC. Black expects 35 letter winners back for 2011.
