Greensboro Day gives #1 Charlotte Christian a run for their money before falling 8-7

Charlotte Christian baseball coach Greg Simmons said his team, the top seed in the private school 3A state tournament, might have been guilty of taking No. 9 seed Greensboro Day for granted in a second-round game Tuesday.

Simmons said that’s how his Knights almost lost a seven-run lead before winning 8-7 at home in front of a big crowd at Charlotte Christian.

Christian (23-8) scored three runs in the third inning and five in the fifth, running out to an 8-1 lead and looking comfortable.

Then, the Knights got a little sloppy.

“We’re up 8-1,” Simmons said, “but they’re trying to score seven (runs) to tie it up. It ain’t like they decided it was over and would pack it in. We kind of rested and it bit us in the backside.”

In the top of the sixth, Greensboro Day (20-9) loaded the bases twice, helped by two walks. One runner scored after a batter was hit by a pitch. Scott Wells knocked home Patrick Howell with a sacrifice, and with two outs, Greensboro Day starting pitcher Huston Harrington hit a grand slam.(Alec Bankhead hit a long fly ball late in the game that could have caused problems, but the Charlotte Christian CF hauled it in to help preserve the win….)

WP-Nick Agrawal. LP-Huston Harrington. Leading Hitters: Christian (John Kincaid 2-for-3, 2 runs; Ty Linton 2-for-3, 2 runs; Trey Laney 2-3, 4 RBIs, 2 runs; Greg Williams 1-2, HR, 2 RBIs). Greensboro Day (Huston Harrington 2-3, grand slam)

  1. Just an FYI…..
Wesleyan Christian is hosting the 3A State tournament but it will not be played at the usual home field–Ed Price.
The State Playoff games will be played at FINCH FIELD, the HiToms Stadium in Thomasville.

    Friday’s games: Semi-Finals 1:00 & 4:00, 7:00 PM- 1st in 3 gm series for Finals
Saturday games 1:00, 4:00 (if necessary)

  2. That’s what I was hearing yesterday and thanks for bringing to our attention here….

Last year High Point Christian hosted their phase of the tournment at War Memorial Stadium and this year High Point Wesleyan is taking the show to Finch Field, home of the HiToms….

I think it is Charlotte Christian vs. Forsyth Country Day in one semifinal game and not sure about the other….Is Wesleyan still in the hunt with Anderson, Midkiff, Hixon and company….HPW is a very sound ball team and Charlotte Christian seems to be a powerhouse…If HPW is still in the hunt, I would think they would throw Hixon in game one to try and punch their tickete to the finals….

  3. I found the pairings and it is:

#2 Charlotte Country Day versus #3 High Point Wesleyan on Friday….

  4. You are right Andy…
1:00 Charlotte Christian vs. Forsyth Country Day
4:00 Charlotte Country Day vs. Wesleyan Christian
7:00 the winners of those 2 games play each other in game 1 of the 3 game Championship

You might be right on WCA’s pitching choice, just as Forsyth CD will likely throw Griffen. You’ve got to win the semis to get to the finals…..

  5. isn’t thecharlotte christian baseball coach a nwg graduate. they brought in a good coach for basketball who is an alum, so why not do it for baseball? yes, i do know gann is an nwg grad, but baseball is really goig downhill fast and they used to dominate the county ms and hs ranks as well as the summer leagues. what’s the matter?
