GUILFORD FOOTBALL ADDS EIGHT MORE STUDENTS FOR 2010 SEASON
GREENSBORO, N.C. —
* Guilford College head football coach *Kevin Kiesel *announced the
intention of eight more incoming students to play football for the Quakers
Monday. All eight students have made their deposit to the college and will
enroll for classes beginning in August. To date, 13 football students have
committed to attend Guilford.
*Mike Bass (Clinton, N.C.) *lettered three years at Hobbton High School
under coach Jeff Byrd. The 6-0, 240-pound offensive tackle also lettered as
a thrower with the track and field team. Bass helped the Wildcats’ football
team to the second round of the North Carolina 1A state playoffs and a 9-4
record in 2009. He considered Methodist University and North Carolina
Wesleyan College before choosing Guilford College.
*Noah Dunbar (Longwood, Fla.)* lettered two years under coach George Clayton
at Lake Brantley High School. He helped the Patriots to a 7-4 record in 2009
and a berth in the Florida 6A state playoffs. The 5-9, 225-pound offensive
lineman was named to the Seminole Athletic Conference All-Academic Team for
both track and football. Dunbar also lettered one year in weight-lifting and
intends to study criminal justice at Guilford.
*C.J. Green (Creedmoor, N.C.)* lettered two years at South Granville High
School under coach Michael Hobgood. The 6-1, 205-pound defensive end
received All-Carolina 9 Conference honors was named the league’s Defensive
Lineman of the Year in 2009. A 2009 First Team All-HighSchoolOT.com
selection, he had 10 sacks among his team-leading 111 tackles in 2009 and
helped the Vikings to their conference title. Green also captained the track
and field team and earned all-conference honors as a sprinter. A member of
the National Honor Society, he considered Methodist, North Carolina Wesleyan
and Catawba College, but chose Guilford.
*Coy Hypes (Boones Mill, Va.)* earned three football letters at Cave Spring
High School under coach Tim Fulton. The 5-10, 195-pound linebacker received
honorable mention All-River Ridge District recognition in his senior season.
A team captain, Hypes helped the Knights to the 2009 Virginia Group AA
Division 3 semifinals and the best record (10-3) in school history. He also
lettered in wrestling and with the track and field team, where he earned
all-district and all-region honors as a sprinter. Hypes is an active member
of Cave Spring’s Young Life chapter and participated in Project LEAD, a
leadership program at Virginia Tech. He also considered Emory and Henry
College, Shenandoah University and Hampden-Sydney College.
*Trey Pennington (Albemarle, N.C.) *lettered four years at Albemarle High
School under coach Baxter Morris. The 6-4, 250-pound offensive lineman
received All-Yadkin Valley Conference honors and helped the Bulldogs to a
16-0 record and the North Carolina Division 1AA state championship in 2009.
He helped Albemarle to conference titles in 2008 and 2009. Pennington also
lettered one year in track and field. He looked at Greensboro College and
Methodist before choosing Guilford.
*Ryan Powell (Randleman, N.C.)* was a two-year letter winner at Providence
Grove High School under Guilford alumnus *Todd Shuping ’88*.* *Powell, a
6-5, 230-pound tight end, also lettered one year earned All-Mid-State 2A
Conference honors and was named to the MyRandolphSports.com All-Randolph
County team. He made 14 catches for 310 yards and five touchdowns in 2009. A
North Caroline Scholar Athlete, Powell was an honorable mention
all-conference basketball selection and played with the tennis team. He
considered Campbell University, Eastern Kentucky University and Western
Carolina University before deciding on Guilford.
*Alex Smith (Pinnacle, N.C.)* lettered two football seasons at South Stokes
High School before transferring to West Stokes High School for his senior
year. He earned All-Northwest 1A/2A Conference honors as a defensive back
for coach Jimmy Upchurch’s team and helped the Wildcats reach the second
round of the Class 2AA West state playoffs. The 5-10, 180-pound cornerback
made a club-best four interceptions and 66 tackles (47 solo), which helped
him earn the Wildcats’ Most Valuable Defensive Back Award. Smith also
lettered in track and field three years and placed sixth in the triple jump
at the 2010 North Carolina High School Athletic Association 2A Midwest
Regional. He is a member of the National Honor Society and intends to study
health sciences at Guilford.
*Kevin Tiller (Chester, Va.) *lettered four years in basketball and
football. The 6-4, 180-pound two-sport standout led coach Greg Lilly’s
Cadets with 10 sacks as a senior defensive end. He also played tight end and
linebacker in his scholastic career. Tiller was a forward with the
basketball team, which posted a 26-10 record in 2009-10. He considered the
Elizabeth City State University and the University of North Carolina at
Pembroke before choosing Guilford.
Guilford concluded the 2009 season with a 4-6 overall record, 2-4 in the Old
Dominion Athletic Conference. The Quakers lost four seniors from the 2009
team and expect as many as 58 letter winners back in 2010. Guilford opens
the season Sept. 4 with the 14th annual Gate City Soup Bowl versus
Greensboro College at 7:00 p.m. in the Quakers’ Armfield Athletic Center.
