GREENSBORO, N.C. – A league record eight Atlantic Coast Conference teams will be among the 64-team field when the 2010 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship gets under way with regional play on Friday.

Virginia (47-11), Georgia Tech (45-13) and Miami (40-17) were named as regional host schools by the NCAA on Sunday, and Florida State (42-17) earned an automatic berth by winning the 2010 ACC Baseball Championship.

Clemson (38-21), North Carolina (36-20), NC State (38-22) and Virginia Tech (38-20) were also among the field of 64 teams announced on Monday, bringing the ACC’s total representation to its conference-record total of eight.

The ACC placed seven teams in the 2005, 2006, 2007 and 2009 NCAA Championship fields. This marks the ninth straight year at least five ACC teams have qualified for NCAA postseason play.

The ACC, Pac-10 and SEC led all conference with eight teams selected to the 2010 NCAA field. The Big 12 had five teams chosen, while the Sun Belt and Big East Conferences each landed three spots.

In addition to being awarded the right to host a regional, Virginia received a No. 5 overall national seed. The Cavaliers are seeking to advance to the College World Series for the second straight year.

Georgia Tech joined the Cavaliers as a national seed, grabbing the eighth and final slot.

Virginia, Georgia Tech, Miami and Florida State are all seeded No. 1 in their regional fields. FSU is the only No. 1 regional seed that will not serve as a host school this weekend. The Seminoles will travel to Norwich, Conn., where second-seeded UConn will serve as the host.

Miami is in the field for the 38th consecutive year, extending its own national record. Florida State is making its 33rd straight appearance, second all-time. Those are the nation’s two current longest streaks, with Cal-State Fullerton’s 19 straight appearances ranking third

Among ACC teams, Clemson will make its 23rd NCAA appearance in 24 years. Georgia Tech is in the NCAA tournament for the third straight year, but the Yellow Jackets have appeared in 24 of the last 26 tournaments overall.

North Carolina is making its ninth straight NCAA appearance and 12th in 13 years. The Tar Heels set an ACC record by reaching the College World Series for the fourth consecutive time last season.

Virginia will make its seventh straight NCAA appearance. NC State, which missed out on NCAA play last season, is back in the field for the seventh time in eight years. Virginia Tech is in the field for the first time since 2000.

Total NCAA postseason appearances (counting this season) for this year’s ACC participating teams are as follows: Clemson 35, Florida State 48, Georgia Tech 26, Miami 39, North Carolina 25, NC State 23, Virginia 10 and Virginia Tech nine..

Regionals, which will consist of four-team double-elimination tournaments at 16 campus sites, will get under way Friday (June 4) and run through Monday (June 7) as necessary.
