Doss, Moore and Whitfield among those headed to the Hall of Fame

We mentioned former Guilford College baseball coach Stuart “Rock” Maynard earlier being announced to the Guilford County Sports Hall of Fame and other good friends of the site that made it this time around are Palomino Baseball legend Bob Doss, former Page Pirate point guard and quarterback Donald Moore and Southeast Guilford basketball standout and Bill Slayton’s right had man at SEG when he was the manager of the football team, Fred Whitfield…..

Good job Bob, Donald and Fred and all of those got in, in 2010…….We know many of the family members such as Andy Maynard, Bracey Maynard, Randy Doss, Sandy Doss, Andy Doss, Donald Moore Jr., Allison Moore, Fred Whitfield Sr., CC Whitfield and Fred’s best friend other than Bill Slayton and that would be Michael Jordan; well you know they all are very proud…..Wonder if Michael will be in town to induct Fred, or if Fred will call on Bill Slayton to send him in……You also have to give a shout out to Darren Corbett, the boys basketball coach at Grimsley High School, on his dad Don Corbett headng into the Hall…

A shout out also to Daryl Brown, the head football coach at Southern Guilford High School, on his grandfather C.K. Siler, the legendary coach at Southern and Sumner, being added to the Hall of Fame…Coach Siler has been around a long time at Southern….

The Guilford County Sports Hall of Fame inductees are:

North Carolina A&T State University men’s basketball coach Don Corbett,
professional football player Jeff Davis, baseball standout Otis Foster, Jr.,
former Greensboro Tennis Association president Sharron Frahm, Greensboro
Grasshoppers president and general manager Donald Moore, award-winning
journalist Benny Phillips, scholastic coaching legend C.K. Siler, North
Carolina Sports Hall of Fame writer Irvin Smallwood and Charlotte Bobcats
president and chief operations officer Fred Whitfield. In addition,

giants Bob Doss and Bill White will be inducted posthumously in the hall’s

  1. CONGRATULATION TO OTIS FOSTER OF HIGH POINT CENTRAL AND HIGH POINT UNIVERSITY. THIS GUY WAS THE REAL DEAL; A GREAT BASEBALL PLAYER AND A GREAT PERSON. HIS CLAIM TO FAME WAS THE LONG BALL ON THE FIELD AND A BIG SMILE OFF THE FIELD. A FIRST ROUND DRAFT CHOICE IN THE MAJORS AND STILL HOLDS RECORDS AT HPU.

  2. for 2 years in a row Page Alumnis and Football All American at Michigan Tripp Welborne gets left off the nomination. If this group of Greensboro SPorts Commission members and whoever is on the committee do not think tripp should be a member of the guilford county sports hall of fame please explain. Andy could you please follow up on this because a explanation is warranted on this issue. Amazing leaving him off.

  3. I would like to submit my name for the Guilford County Sports Hall of Fame. I have looked at your inductees, past and present, and realize that I am far more qualified than your slate. I have been retired from sports for more than 5 years, unlike many of inductees who are still active or have many years of sports left.

While my participation in Guilford County is limited, my knowledge of the game and influence upon the youth of the area for many years also surpasses that of those nominated or previously inducted.

Plus, I can buy a few tables for your banquet, bring it some national exposure and possibly even arrange for it to be broadcast live. It’s on a Monday, which I am normally off at my Sports Store, which will make travel easier.

I look forward to your response. I’ll be signing autographs later today and tomorrow at the mall at Caesar’s Palace.

  4. Tripp Welbourne needs to be in the hall of fame. and I second the motion for Pete Rose. Qualifications for the Hall of Fame appear to be vague, so why not Pete Rose? He won’ get in because e appears over qualified. He’s actually had accomplishments other than years of service.
