Pete Schultz turned in a bulldog-like pitching performance and the Eagles’ power surge was not affected by a bigger park as East beat Wilmington Laney 4-3 in Game 1 of the NCHSAA’s 4-A state championship series at N.C. State’s Doak Field.

Schultz, a stringy 5-11 senior, hit a rough patch in the middle innings but finished strong to run his record to 9-2. And the Eagles — averaging two home runs a game in the postseason — cranked out two more, one from sophomore Jacob Watts and another from Evan Orenstein, who provided the game-winning run in the fifth inning.

East (23-8) can close out the best-of-3 series and nail down its first state title if it wins Game 2 today, when Shane Dickerson will get the start for the Eagles. A deciding third game, if needed, would be played at either 5 or 8 p.m
