Bank Park. *Maynard *joins *Rick Ferrell ’28*, *Wes Ferrell ’28*, *Bob
Jamieson ’32, Jerry Steele*, *Jack Jensen*, *Marion Kirby *and *Herb
Appenzeller *as hall of fame members with Guilford College ties.

The other 2010 Guilford County Sports Hall of Fame inductees
are: North Carolina A&T State University men’s basketball coach Don Corbett,
professional football player Jeff Davis, baseball standout Otis Foster, Jr.,
former Greensboro Tennis Association president Sharron Frahm, Greensboro
Grasshoppers president and general manager Donald Moore, award-winning
journalist Benny Phillips, scholastic coaching legend C.K. Siler, North

president and chief operations officer Fred Whitfield. In addition,
Greensboro businessman and philanthropist Joe Bryan, Sr., and youth baseball
giants Bob Doss and Bill White will be inducted posthumously in the hall’s
first Legends Class. Doss is the father of Guilford College Vice President
for Enrollment Services *Randy Doss ’82*, who played baseball for the
Quakers under *Maynard*.

*Maynard*, 92, served Guilford and its students for 33 years in
numerous capacities, most notably as the Quakers’ head baseball coach from
1952-1984. His teams enjoyed great success on the field and he has received
many honors, but the man called “Rock” may be best known for his caring
leadership that has impacted many.

*Maynard *came to Guilford in 1940 from Harnett County, N.C.,
and played baseball and football for the Quakers. He captained both teams in
1942 and was named the school’s Best Senior Athlete. After graduation, he
married his college sweetheart, *Ruth Weisgerber ’43*, and served two years
as a chief petty officer in the U.S. Navy. *Maynard* started coaching in
1947 at Williamston High School and took the football team to the 1950 state
title.

Guilford called the following year and *Maynard *accepted
President Clyde Milner’s invitation to return to his alma mater as athletic
director, director of physical education, head football coach and head
baseball coach. Appenzeller took over as head football coach and athletic
director in 1956, but *Maynard *stayed on the football staff as an assistant
for six years. He remained the director of physical education for 21 years
and maintained a full teaching load. *Maynard *earned his master’s degree
from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill largely by taking
summer classes.

*Maynard’s *baseball teams enjoyed unprecedented success in the
1960s, which resulted in a number of team and personal awards. He was named
the 1966 NAIA National Baseball Coach of the Year after guiding the Quakers
to a school-record 25 wins and the school’s first NAIA Baseball World Series
berth. *Maynard *won the Carolinas Conference Coach of the Year prize a year
later and captured four District 26 Coach of the Year prizes in his career.
Guilford returned to the NAIA World Series in 1976, which led to *Maynard’s
*receipt of the Professional Baseball Scouting Association’s Coach of the
Year Award.

Also a member of the NAIA Baseball and Guilford College
Athletics Halls of Fame, *Maynard *coached 11 students who signed
professional baseball contracts and three All-Americans. The Quakers’
baseball team went 436-394-4 in *Maynard’s *tenure. He holds school records
for most baseball coaching wins and years of service. **

* *Guilford dedicated the Maynard Batting Center on campus in
April and installed “Rock’s Rock” nearby to honor the coaching great. *Maynard
*received the 2006 Charles C. Hendricks Distinguished Service Award from
Guilford’s Alumni Association, which also presented him with its Alumni
Excellence Award in 1982.

*Maynard *will be honored at the Guilford County Sports Hall of
Fame Banquet September 20 at the Greensboro Coliseum. For ticket
