*****The East Forsyth Eagles may have come up a just a bit short of that State Title, but we want to Congratulate all of these young men and Coach Plaster on an excellent season and they represented our Triad area well, throughout the playoffs…..*****

East Forsyth, which paved a path to the NCHSAA 4-A baseball championship by feasting on fastballs, couldn’t stomach a steady diet of slow curveballs.

The Eagles, who took command on Friday night by winning Game 1, lost two games and the series yesterday to Wilmington Laney, losing the dramatic third game 6-5 in eight innings last night(Saturday) at N.C. State’s Doak Field.

Caleb Wells, Laney’s designated hitter, was 0 for 7 for the series when he crushed a two-out, solo homer to left in the top of the eighth, and East went down in order in the bottom of the inning, ending its dream season.

“It’s a tough way to go out,” said Shane Dickerson of East. “We scored four in the sixth to make it a ballgame again. We gave it all we had; it just wasn’t good enough.”

The story of the series for East was its epic struggle with Kyle Legates, a 5-11, 170-pound senior reliever who pitched all three games for the Bucs. Legates, who threw 127 pitches over the three games, pitched nearly eight innings yesterday while barely hitting 70 mph on the stadium’s radar gun.

His curveball was something most of the Eagles couldn’t deal with, and it helped him win the series MVP award.
