The radio talk was hot on this topic this past weekend and the talkers say that if the SEC comes callin’ then Clemson, Georgia Tech, Florida State and Miami would all be crazy not to bolt to the new league…..”The Sweet 16 SEC”…..
There is talk of the new PAC 16, a BIG 16, the SEC Sweet 16 and many other variations for the future and if I was working at the ACC, I would go get Georgia, South Carolina, Florida and West Virginia and I wouldn’t stand back and let the SEG rob the ACC….
Georgia could match up with Georgia Tech, South Carolina with Clemson, Florida with Florida State and Miami and West Virginia with Virginia Tech, Virginia and Maryland….
I was proposing adding Virginia Tech, Florida State, Miami and others to the league long before the most recent expansions were being considered and that plan that I cooked up was in print at the old Sports Page newspaper back in the Summer of 1985 and I had the attention of the entire nation and it is time for me to get on my soapbox again and make sure that the SEC does not raid our henhouse…..
We must aggressively pursue Georgia, South Carolina, Florida, and West Virginia and if we want them, they can be ours for the taking, because we all know that the ACC is the best place to be…..
The SEC is like an old pirate ship and if you join them, then it like walking the plank…..You are destined for disaster in the SEC….The people from Tennessee will tell you and they will give it to you straight, “The Jug Is Fixin’ To Run Dry Soon” and at that time it will all be over for the SEC……
The SEC is like a band of misfits and we need to take their teams instead of letting them come in and rob us blind…..Texas and Oklahoma to the PAC 16, Baylor and Texas A&M to PAC 16, Notre Dame to the BIG 16 and more names are on the board to be moving, so let’s move and go get:
Georgia
South Carolina
Florida
and West Virginia
and bring them into the new and improved 16-member league, your Atlantic Coast Conference…..
Are you with me or are you going to stand back and watch those SEC two-year degree characters take us to the proverbial woodshed?????

Why are we letting Delaney and the Big 10 dominate NCAA football and make decisions that will affect the ACC and other conferences? Why isn’t Swofford, the ACC, and other conferences doing something to head off this monopoly by the BIG 10? We are watching the slow drain of revenues nationally to the Big 10. We are watching the slow death of college football conferences, colleges, and traditions. Yes, schools and conferences are dying. Delaney smartly makes decisions that will put the Big 10 in a richer and more powerful position. The more he does, the more non-Big 10 athletics administrators tell us how wonderful he is, and never challenge him. Are they afraid of Jim Delaney? Where are those congressmen that were so determined to put a playoff system in place. Did Jim beat them too? We need help now, before our financially strapped schools are forced to drop football. Why don’t you promote a playoff structure that will discourage this model and more evenly distribute revenue between the conferences.
We have become complacent. The ACC is a cash cow. Money is coming in (for now) and we are too short sighted to see the impending doom ahead of us. The Big 10 will ruin the traditions of college football afor everyone but themselves and the ACC is doing nothing to stop it. Heads in the sand. Maybe it’ll go away. Maybe we can hire Jim Delaney to come to the ACC.

This whole process will blow up in the face of these conferences at some point and fall like the housing market. What made the ACC so strong in basketball and the SEC so strong in football is the closest of the schools to each others fan base. The reason that the ACC and SEC draws big ratings against each other is because they are neighbors in a fight for each other. But when you are playing teams that are 3 to 5 states away, then it starts losing its meaning unless its one of the “big name” schools for a specific sport. The “average” school in these mega conferences will die a slow death (ie Wake Forest, Boston College, Clemmon, South Carolina, Ole Miss, Arkansas, Mississippi or Vanderbilt). The big names in basketball or football will survive but suffer in the lesser sports. It may seem nice to have more high profile names in football or basketball but people only care about the names at the top of the poles which means 2/3 of the league will suffer in all sports from football to basketball to baseball, track, or whatever.
Losing a Miami or FSU in football would hurt the ACC but it will also kill or hurt those schools in other sports such as basketball, track and baseball. All of these sports must have the bills paid and if you are not at the top of your league or the national polls, then you will only be a small fish in a large lake that no one is talking about. The fan base will still be upset and the alumi will be calling for your head.
This is a no win situation for these schools.
