Last night the Chicago Blackhawks won the NHL Stanley Cup. Greensboro was represented by John Torchetti, Assistant Coach. He was an Assistant Coach in Greensboro as well. You can read his Blackhawk’s bio or his Hockey DB infopage.

greensboro was represented? are you kidding? it says he was born in boston. is that a suburb of greensboro? i bet he’ll take the cup to boston for his day with it. so he coached in greensboro with some minor leagues. big deal. how does that “represent” greensboro?
Relax. He was never saying he “lived” in Greensboro. If he did, these guys would be making a big deal about it.
Dan Bylsma, who played for the Monarchs, won a Cup with the Pens in his first half season of coaching.
If you followed the GREENSBORO Monarchs back in the 90s, you know how much of a big deal that team was. They were a big part of the community. Why else do you think they drew such big numbers in the ECHL? Fighting? Maybe that was part of it, but it was a good product and good guys. There was a reason why attendance went down when the AHL came here (besides ticket prices)…the player personalities had no connection to the city at all. It was just come here and then move on to Miami and the NHL.
So Torchetti’s significance in Greensboro might not be worth much to some, but for those who were big Monarchs fans back in the day, it’s a big deal.
rumor is Rick Dudley (Winston Salem Thunderbirds) has been waiting for the Finals to end to offer Torchetti the Atlanta Thrashers coaching job.
