Back-to-Back shutouts by Newton and Flinchum has the SEG Junior Legion team looking good

Dallas Newton tossed a seven-inning, complete-game shutout, with a two-hitter, as the SEG Junior Legion Falcons topped Asheboro Post 45, 4-0, on Friday night at Falcon Field….

Newton equalled Stephen Strasburg’s Friday evening effort with 10 strikeouts……Newton threw 85 pitches with 59 going for strikes and 26 coming across the plate as balls….Looking back at my unofficial scorebook, I only see where Newton issued one walk on the night….Another fine job turned in behind the plate, by Devin Sweet, as the young Falcon catcher seems to get better, as he sees more time back there, and he might have us thinking back to the days of Charlie Johnson and Elrod Hendricks, before this season is over….

You just look at the Falcon efforts by the pitching staff alone this week and you see some strong work, with 14 K’s by Craig Jacobelli on Tuesday at Thomasville, 11 K’s by DJ Flinchum in his shutout effort over Graham on Thursday and then Newton’s outing, where he almost defied gravity, in the win against Asheboro’s Post 45 last night….

I’d still like to see a shutout by Shutt this season, Dylan Shutt that is, and who knows what Austin Bain might be able to do when returns on Sunday, after a week-long mission trip/respite to Ohio…….

The Falcons collected five hits on Friday night with two of those belonging to DJ Flinchum, as DJ picked up a couple of singles and scored one run….Cody Ezell had two more of the hits, as the Big EZ slapped an RBI double and he got himself a single and he scored one run….Cam Gardner came up with the other Falcon hit, with a single and Cam also drew a walk and scored once…The #2 man in the batting order, Craig Jacobelli, did his job as his OBP was .1000 with his three walks, in three plate appearances and his good eye put him in position to score one run…..

The Falcons got good and very steady defense from Josh Blackwell and Will Greene at second base and third base respectively, and we even had a chance to speak with the Pleasant Garden mayor, Bill Greene, and former SEG Falcon head baseball coach Kevin Callahan, during our radio broadcast of the game, so all in all, it was a very productive evening….

Southeast Guilford will travel to Asheboro, to face this same Post 45 squad on Sunday afternoon, in game that will be played on the new field turf, at McCrary Field…….

*****The word around SEG Falcon Field, was that Asheboro was in first place in the Summer Junior Legion Baseball League standings, before last night’s game at Southeast, so Post 45 will be looking for some sort of payback come Sunday afternoon….*****
