Carolina Cardinals 16u Runner Up at 2010 NC ASA State Championship
The Carolina Cardinals 16u team coached by Mitchell Key, Jerry(Smitty) Smith, Mark Hulin and Jamie Tysinger participated in the 2010 NC ASA State Fast pitch Championship Tournament held at Walnut Creek Softball Complex.
The tournament hosted twenty five of the best 16u fast pitch softball teams in the
state. Each team played two pool games on Friday and then went into a double elimination tournament on Saturday and Sunday.
The Cardinals started out slow dropping its first game to the Fuquay Bombs but came back to win their next pool game against the NC Challengers. Their first bracket game they defeated the Wayne County Hurricanes. They then went on to win against the NC Lightning, Cape Fear Storm and the NC Challengers. The Cardinals and the Carolina Cobras were the two remaining undefeated teams and squared off on Sunday morning.
The Carolina Cobras got the 1-0 victory and advanced to the championship. This game featured two of the best pitchers in the state. Cobras pitcher Chelsea Wilkinson from Alexander Central is the 2010 Gatorade NC Softball Player of the Year. Cardinals pitcher Carley Tysinger from Central Davidson is the 2010 2A West Pitcher of the Year.
The Cardinals now faced an elimination game against their sister team the Carolina Cardinals – Chandler. With nothing to lose and everything to prove the Cardinals took the elimination game and advanced to the championship to the play the Carolina Cobras again. The Carolina Cobras won the game 4-1.
