More sports and news on the radio in the Triad

WMFR 1230AM, WSML 1200AM and WCOG 1320AM have teamed up and they are now carrying sports on the radio in the Triad/Guilford County.

The radio stations are owned by Curtis Media Inc., out of Raleigh, and they are also linked up with WSJS 600 in Winston-Salem….

The move came sometime late Sunday night or early Monday morning, as I picked it up on the way in Monday….They are simulcasting WSJS 600 up until 9am and then they pick up Taylor Zarzour(Sports) out of Raleigh on the North Carolina Talk Network….At noon they go with David Glenn(Sports) from the Triangle area, again on the NC Talk Network….Primetime with the PacMan is now on 1200/1230/1320, as well as 790 the Ball, from 3-7pm…..At 7pm, 1200, 1230 and 1320 all go back to WSJS programming…..

1200/1230/1320 will probably have sole access to the PacMan’s Show, if 790 rolls all Hispanic at the end of the year. 1200/1230/1320 will also look to pick up the Duke Blue Devils football and basketball or the UNC Tar Heels since Duke is gone from 98.3 due to Hispanic programming changes on the Country Legends 98.3 and the Heels may be out on 94.1 due to the new K-LOVE format….

It would make sense for Duke to hit 1200/1230/130 and for North Carolina to hook up with RUSH Radio 94.5….Bill Flynn is the morning talk host on 94.5 and he is a well-known UNC-grad. This would also allow 94.5 to battle more with 101.1 WZTK, since 101.1 has the deals with Wake Forest football and basketball and they carry the Carolina Panthers…

We’ll have to wait and see how all of this shakes out, but one thing is for certain, the days of the radio companies spending big bucks on talent are gone…..Don’t look for a large crew of new talents coming in, with all the network offerings available for FREE, the bosses are not going to fork over monies for talent when they can keep it for themselves…

Musical stations(Sports/Talk), much like the game of musical chairs, is the game of choice again, this summer in the Triad…..

  1. I’ve also heard WSML is also part of the sports super station. Basically, this sports station will attract Greensboro, High Point, Burlington, and part of Winston.

On top of that, I’ve also heard it’ll be ESPN Radio. So, in other words, WE’RE FINALLY GETTING LEGITIMATE ESPN RADIO IN THE TRIAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I never thought I’d see the day.
