Week Two of the HS football training camps

This morning’s journey took us out on Hicone Road, which is off of Highway 29 North, and we had a chance to watch the Northeast Guilford Rams go to work in full pads….

The Rams, led by Coach Tommy Pursley and assiatant coach Bob Via, were doing blocking drills to improve their overall run-blocking….The coaches were teaching the linemen about splits and stances and the drills were designed to focus on LIVE blocking, with NO tackling….

Coach Pursley was putting his linemen through their paces and the kids seemed to picking up on what the coaches were teaching….Coach Pursley is an excellent teacher and he has spent many years teaching his Rams the run-blocking schemes….

The coaches got the players ready to go LIVE and reminded everyone that all plays were on 1….At that point the Rams began to run their plays and the backs looked to be on their game, but Coach Pursley had to stay after the linemen and let them know to “Do it Again”….

“Do it again, that was pitiful”, said the coach….”Do it again, run it again and we’re going to do it, again and again”….”We’re talking base blocking here with one step and then get outside with your block”, says Coach Pursley…..The coach also reminds the players/blockers to stay low…..

Northeast has some big linemen this year and NEG never has the real outstanding/household name talents, but Coach Pursley knows how to get the most out of his kids……The big blokckers up front have to continue to learn how to kick out and get outside on their blocks…..

There were about 80 kids in the Northeast practice with Varsity and JV’s working seperately and as I was leaving out, there was a full scrimmage, with yard-markers/sticks going on, at mid-field…..

NEG will be in the srimmage with NWG and Reagan at Northwest on Thursday and then they will turn around and head up to Rockingham County for the NewBridge Bank Jamboree on Friday……
