Elon’s Brandon Wiggins(Smith HS) SoCon Defensive Player of the Week

SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Elon senior linebacker Brandon Wiggins(Smith High School) was recognized as the Southern Conference Defensive Player of the Week following his performance at Duke on Sept. 4. Wiggins has been honored by the league office once before as he was named the SoCon’s Freshman of the Week in 2007. The players of the week are selected by the league office.

Wiggins had a stellar outing against the Blue Devils, matching a career-high with 19 total tackles. Of the 19 stops, nine were of the solo variety. He also added one-half tackle for a loss. With his performance, Wiggins claimed the number 10 spot on the program’s career tackles list with 253.

Wiggins first posted a 19-tackle game at The Citadel on November 10, 2007. He finished one game with 10 or more tackles last year, making 13 stops at Richmond in the FCS Playoffs. Wiggins now has nine career games with at least 10 tackles.

Wiggins and the Phoenix will open up their home slate this weekend when the Shaw Bears visit Rhodes Stadium for a 7 p.m. game on Sept. 11.

  1. Know him quite well from his Smith days, a great young man and student. Just maybe he’ll get a shot at the next level,if not he’ll be a productive influence at whatever he does in life. Best wishes Brandon,you deserve it my man.
