Wasps wallop Pride 28-6

Greensboro, N.C. — Caleb Jennings ran for 155 yards and scored one touchdown as Emory & Henry (2-0) defeated Greensboro College (1-1), 28-6, at Jamieson Stadium on Saturday.

Greensboro’s lone offensive highlight was 53-yard touchdown reception by Antwan Thorpe (Oxford, NC/Webb) from Seth Adams (Burlington, NC/Willliams) that cut the deficit to 21-6 with 13:33 remaining in the game. Thorpe had four receptions for 89 yards. After a stellar opening game, Adams was 13-28 for 159 yards and had two interceptions.

Jennings carried the ball 25 times as the visiting Wasps used a ball-control offense to defeat GC. EHC compiled 377 total yards on 75 plays. The Pride had 231 yards on 51 plays. The visitors had the edge in time of possession 36:24 to 23:36..

“Emory & Henry did to us what we did in the opening week against Guilford,” said Pride Head Coach Dr. Randy Hunt. “They controlled the game and we just weren’t as sharp today.”

The game was scoreless until 12 seconds before halftime. Quarterback Dustin Beck found Corey Ware in the end zone for an 18-yard scoring pass. Beck was 11-23 for 124 yards passing.

The visitors added two scores in the third quarter. Jennings ran for a two-yard scoring plunge with 9:03 left in the period. Adam Pugh later returned a punt 61 yards for a score with six seconds left in the quarter.

Wasp backup quarterback Drew Piscopo connected with Cody Bridge on an 11-yard scoring pass for the game’s final tally with 3:03 left in the contest. Place kicker Austin Breed was perfect on four PATs for EHC.

Allen Stallings (Manteo, NC/Manteo) led The Pride defense with 14 tackles (7 solo) and one sack. Teammate Brian Green (Stuart, FL/Martin County) had 11 stops, including 3 unassisted tackles.

The Pride plays another non-conference game next week. GC travels to face the Apprentice School in Newport News, Va. next Saturday at 1 p.m.
