“The Curse of the Blue Hose Heckler”: Why UNC has fallen on hard/bad times…

This is a good one and no matter which side of the fence you are on, you need to get on this article, because it could make your week…..

from Dan Wiederer at fayobserver.com:

Nine months ago, everything within the University of North Carolina athletic program seemed hunky dory. The Tar Heels’ football team, after posting eight wins during the regular season for the second straight year, was preparing to face Pitt in the Meineke Car Care Bowl. The basketball team, meanwhile, was the defending national champion and ranked 11th in the AP poll, seemingly on track to continue its reign of dominance with a young but talented group that had proven its potential with a thrilling 89-82 home win over Michigan State at the start of December.

The feel-good vibrations were everywhere. Success seemed to be a given in Chapel Hill.

That was the situation when the sun rose on Dec. 12, 2009. But later that night, during the second half of a game at the Smith Center, a Presbyterian fan named Brian King rose from his seat during a Deon Thompson free throw attempt, yelled “Hey Deon, miss it!” at the top of his lungs and the positive energy was disturbed.

Annoyed by King’s obnoxious shout, UNC coach Roy Williams spun, hollered at King and motioned for security to get control of the heckler. Within minutes, Smith Center authorities had King removed from the arena. And just like that, not only had a mini-controversy erupted in Chapel Hill, but somehow the upward arc of both the football and basketball programs made a drastic U-turn almost immediately after.

Consider it coincidence if you want. If you’re into hexes, you can call it “The Curse of the Blue Hose Heckler.” Either way, there’s no denying the past nine months at UNC have proven to be a truly tumultuous time in the history of Tar Heel athletics.

Here’s a look at the 10 most dispiriting moments of the past nine months.

  1. I think these things go in seven year cycles. The curse can only be removed if the bell tower is burned to the ground AND the Tarheels and their fans rise up daily and sing praises toward the superior teams at NCSU in Raleigh. 🙂

  2. North Carolina was cursed when they got rid of Bill Dooley and Bill Gutheridge. Those men were the foundation of Kenan and Carmichael. Without the Williams we are just lost forever. The future is bleak.

  3. The only way to remove the curse is to fire Butch Davis or ask the gentleman with the Fayetteville Observer to throw away his PC and never write on this subject again.

  4. I called this one months ago…..glad to see the mainstream media….er….well….this guy a least picked it up. Go Blue Hose!

  5. North Carolina 0-2 and the Carolina Panthers 0-2. This is a real serious curse. How can we end it? This is destroying our entire state!
