Greensborosports.com/FedEx Player of the Week, plus area Check List…

Last week we had a battle with James Summers, Derek Grant and Jeff Sims for the top spot and Summers came home as the GSO.com/FedEx POW(Player of the Week)……

Good tight batttle with Sims, Grant and Summers and now James joins these men in the quest for the Greensborosports.com/FedEx Player of the Year……

Daniel Downing(Northern Guilford)
Matt Pawlowski(Northwest Guilford)
Mike Fields(Southeast Guilford)
Elijah Jordan(Smith)
Drew Adams(High Point Central)
James Summers(Page)

This week we will take a look at Jamie Cunningham(Southern Guilford) and Reid Baxter(Northwest Guilford) as the candidates for Player of the Week….Send me your thoughts/votes to andy@greensborosports.com…..

RB, Reid Baxter, had 210 yards and he scored 3 touchdowns in NWG’s 42-17 victory over Southwest Guilford….Baxter has the speed and he is a very determined runner and he will need all of that and more, this week at High Point Central…..Cunningham continued to add to his season totals by going 16-26 in passing for 308 yards and 4 TD’s in the SG Storm 42-17 win at Randleman…..Both NWG and SG win by the same, identical score…..How crazy is that…..Codie Davis, from Smith also had a solid game for the Golden Eagles, as they topped Southeast Guilford, 41-30….Also weird, is that you don’t see that 41-30 score all that often, but it was Smith 41-30 over SEG and then VA Tech, 41-30 over N.C. State on Saturday……Not a happy time if you went to SEG and then later attended N.C. State……

Baxter, Cunningham and then consideration for Codie Davis, who caught one TD pass for Smith and also tossed a touchdown, on a fake punt play for the Golden Eagles….

On the Check List, you have to have Davis and let’s add in the three power backs from SEG; Mike Fields, Phil Petty and Marques Haynesworth who rushed for 238 yards, as a unit in the SEG Falcon backfield…..Let’s add on Duke McCoy for Smith, who just continues to play outstanding all-around football and Eric Ebron, who makes the Big Plays, week after week….Smith QB Jeff Sims deserves a nod as he and the team went 4-15 passing, but 3 of the 4 passes went for TD’s…..There was one pick and there should have been about three more…..The three Sims touchdown passes covered 120 yards and the Davis TD on the fake punt, went for 75 yards…..We also need to add Austen Thompson of Southern Guilford to “The List”….Meant to add him on the first go-round, but his numbers were impressive with a 10-yard pass reception for a TD from QB Cunningham and he took an interception back 86 yards for a score….

We also have a spot for Daniel Downing(Northern Guilford) on “The List”, this week….He has been here just about every week this season……He Cunningham, Sims and Summers are running a pretty tight race….Last week Downing ran for 107 yards on 17 carries for 2 TD’s and he threw for one TD on 7-12 passing from his quarterback spot, in the NG Nighthawk offense….Maurce Harris caught all seven of those passes and the TD and he posted 89 yards for the Nighthawks and he has earned a spot on the “Check List”, for his efforts…..

Northern travels to Eastern Guilford this week and the ‘Hawks will put their #6 state-wide 3-A ranking on the line, against the Wildcats’ QB on the prowl, Dylan Harris….Harris lofted 16 passes last Friday night and completed 8 of those and 4 of the 8, went for touchdowns and each one went to a different receiver….Gaddy, Wright, Hedrick, Huffman and Walker and Gunn on the run for Eastern last week in the 42-0 win, over the Morehead Panthers….A spot on “The List”, goes to Dylan Harris…….

The Ragsdale Tigers have two defensive players on “The List”, after last week’s turnover filled, 10-7 win, over East Forsyth…..The Tigers were very lucky/fortunate to come away with a win in this one, as Sharif Diaz intercepted one pass and he returned a kickoff 44 yards to help the Tigers’ cause…..LB, Trey Swaim, had his best defensive outing of the year for Ragsdale and he also grabbed an interception, from the East QB Eric Smith and Swaim was swarming all night long, on the Tiger defense…….

If you have any other names you would like to see added to the list, drop them in the comment box or just send them to andy@greensborosports.com…..Same deal on noninees for POW(Player of the Week)

  1. Give Baxter props. The kid’s got wheels. He’s the real deal and only a sophomore. Keep your eye on him. He might just break some rushing records.

  2. Austen Thompson also had a great night for Southern Guilford. He had 2 interceptions, 1 of which he returned 88 yards for a touchdown (He has 7 interceptions on the season). He also caught 5 balls for 99 yards and a touchdown.

  3. Smith should have had thrown three picks though. Poor dude from SE couldnt hang onto all three of those balls (right in his hands). I know I know, shoulda coulda woulda, but I’m jus saying.

  4. You are right about Austen Thompson, I got busy on the Jamie Cunningham numbers and forgot to get Auten’s up year yesterday….

Brought my paper/info with me today and will get those Thompson numbers up here ASAP….

I thought Sterling Brooks, #30 SEG, did pick off one Jeff Sims(Smith) pass last week?????

  5. I Agree He Should Have Picked Them Off..But To Andy No There Were No Picks By Southeast..Smth Had A Pick Though By Michael Millner #1
