Chapel Hill, N.C. — In an update Thursday to the UNC Board of Governors, Chancellor Holden Thorp of UNC-Chapel Hill apologized repeatedly for the dual investigations casting a cloud over the football team.

“I’m sorry for the fact we are all going through this,” he said.

He defended head football coach Butch Davis and Athletic Director Dick Baddour, saying both have done everything they can to cooperate with and advance the investigation.

“Coach Davis knows he has a lot of work to do,” Thorp said.

UNC President Erksine Bowles echoed Thorp’s frustration but praised the way the investigation has been handled.

“I don’t know anybody that is more disappointed or angrier than Holden is,” he said.

“While I, too, am angry that this occurred at my alma mater, I am very, very proud of the investigation and follow-up that has occurred since this awful event came to our attention.”
