Tar Heels’ T.J. Yates lets play on field define his season

Yates’ positive play silences critics

If one had asked a large group of North Carolina fans back in July which person within the football program was most likely to stand in the way of an ACC championship, the answer would have been near-unanimous.

Not John Blake.

Not Marvin Austin.

Not anyone involved in the increasingly ugly investigations into potential NCAA violations and academic fraud.

No, back in those pre-doomsday days, the answer would have been quarterback T.J. Yates, an unusually unpopular figure among the fan base – particularly after backup Bryn Renner’s sparkling spring game performance, but also because of his 15 interceptions a year ago.

Before he started having to answer questions about Blake, North Carolina coach Butch Davis spent a good portion of his time with the media alternately opening and closing the door to playing Renner in the opener against LSU. It seemed like the question wasn’t if Yates would lose the starting job, it was when.

Yet a month into the season, the bright spot among the dark clouds for the Tar Heels has unquestioningly been Yates.
