INDIANAPOLIS (WGHP) – Ex-NASCAR driver and Pleasant Garden native Shane Hmiel remains in critical but stable condition after crashing during qualifying at the U.S. Auto Racing Club’s Silver Crown race at Terre Haute Action Track.

Hmiel, 30, was airlifted to an Indianapolis hospital Saturday night after his vehicle slammed into a wall between Turns 3 and 4 and then rolled over, multiple media outlets reported.

Hmiel suffered broken vertebrae in his neck and a broken back, and was expected to undergo surgery, USAC officials said in a release.

“We are optimistic for Shane’s recovery and have committed our resources to the Hmiel family,” USAC President and CEO Kevin Miller said Sunday.

Steve Hmeil, a former NASCAR crew chief and Shane’s father, said his son has “a long road to recovery.” Steve Hmeil is now director of competition for NASCAR’s Earnhardt Ganassi Racing.

Shane Hmiel began his NASCAR career in 2001 but was was banned for life in 2006 after failing three drug tests.
