GREENSBORO N.C. (WGHP) – North Carolina A&T’s Athletic Director Wheeler Brown was terminated on Friday in the wake of an A&T student who died during a track tryout.

Jospin Milandu, 20, of Knightdale collapsed during a track tryout at A&T on Aug. 19. He was transported to Moses Cone hospital, where he died later that day.

Brown said Milandu was running laps during practice without an athletic trainer present, which is against school policy.

“Word cannot express the profound sadness we feel as an athletic department and a university family,” said Brown. Milandu did not have a physical on file at A&T.

An investigation report from the medical examiner’s office stated Milandu’s mother also carried the same sickle-cell traits. The family told the examiner Milandu had no prior similar episodes, nor any other significant medical history.

  1. Why were they having “Track” tryouts in the fall? Isn’t the sport in the winter (Indoor) and Spring (Outdoor)? The school deserves to be sued.

  2. The real problem is why was the kid at tryouts without a physical? they’ll be lawyers lined up to represent the family.

Coach Thompson stated in the News-Record that it was a cross country tryout which makes it legal. Cross Country is a fall sport. I would be more than willing to bet that those that made the team from that tryout are running in cross country meets this fall.
