Greensboro College Fantastic Football Finish Falls short versus Ferrum

Greensboro, N.C. — Quarterback Marcus Mayo threw for two scores and Ferrum had 268 rushing yards as the Panthers defeated Greensboro College, 28-20, on Saturday at Jamieson Stadium. FC improved to 2-4, 2-1 and The Pride dropped to 1-5, 0-3.
Freshman quarterback Kall Daniel (Brookville, FL/Hernando) led a Pride comeback from a 21-0 second quarter deficit. Daniel threw 18-31 for 250 yards and three touchdowns. He also ran for 46 yards on 16 carries.

Pride sophomore Antwan Thorpe (Oxford, NC/Webb) had 145 receiving yards, three touchdown receptions, and seven catches.

“We’re a young football team, but there were some good signs today,” said GC Head Coach Dr. Randy Hunt. “We got off to another slow start but we scored more points today than any other game. I wished we could play another quarter as we ran out of time.”

A 27-yard connection between Daniel and Thorpe cut the margin to 28-18 with 2:03 remaining in the contest. Victor McCoy took a pitch in for a two-point conversion to make the score 28-20.

“Kall had an outstanding game,” Hunt said. “He took some hard hits but hung in there. He made some great throws and was our leading rusher.”

An ensuing on-sides pooch kick by Chad Adams (Yadkinville, NC/Forbush) was fair caught by the Panthers. On the next series, Ferrum’s Justin Donnelly’s 12-yard rush got the visitors a first down that allowed them to run out the clock.

FC’s Derrick West’s two receptions were for touchdowns. The first was a 37-yard reception with 8:07 left in the first quarter. His second covered 36 yards and occurred with 36 seconds in the third period and put the Panthers ahead 28-12.

The Panthers had three players rush for more than 75 yards: Mayo (75); Steven Harris (75) and Roger Smith (85). Other than Daniel, The Pride got 42 yards on 10 carries from tailback Robert Byrd (Atlanta, GA/Grady ).

Ferrum outgained GC in total yards, 353 to 434. However, most of that yardage came in the second half for the home team.

FC’s T.J. Grzesikowski punted four times for a 46-yard average and placed two boots inside the 20-yard line.

The Pride’s Allen Stallings (Manteo, NC/Manteo) recorded a game-high 12 tackles in the contest.

  1. How can it be a fantastic finish when you loose your 5th straight…..that away to make it look good sports information

  2. We were just saying that the Fantastic Finish fell short versus Ferrum…..It was in the makings, but it was not complete….The kids at GC are having fun playing football in the fall…..

Who ever said this all about winning?

Wait a miunute, I’ll get back to you on that one…….

  3. I’m glad their having fun. If losing floats their boats then they are in heaven. This upcoming off-season this team is going to have to buckle down and do some serious work. They also need to get them a coach. I’ve said all along they need to bring back Tim Lewis. He is the 2nd leader rusher of all-time as well as a former assistant. This needs to be tops on the list.

  4. I totally agree about the coaching situation! Too bad that some of the best athletes are not on the field, and I cannot agree that they are having fun!!! And that was definitely not a fantastic finish! Valiant effort, but fantastic???………..

  5. Last I heard Tim Lewis was managing “The Rush” over in Burlington. No one cares more about GC than he does. He is also great at knowing who needs to be on the field.
