Guilford College Athletics update

The men’s soccer team downed Bridgewater, 4-1, Saturday on the road. Four
different Quakers scored in the first 38 minutes and Greg Carnovale had a
pair of assists.

Guilford’s men’s cross country team won the three-team North Carolina
Collegiate Cross Country Championships Saturday. Derick Kosgei captured the
individual crown. He completed the eight-kilometer Meadows Course in 25:58.

The women’s cross country team placed fifth among 10 teams at the North
Carolina Collegiate Cross Country Championships Saturday. Taylor Stokes
paced Guilford’s effort with an eighth-place time of 25:07 on the
six-kilometer course.

The Quakers’ volleyball team won twice at a tri-match hosted by Bridgewater
College. Guilford upended the host Eagles, 3-1, for its first win over
Bridgewater since 1997. Brittany Freeman led the way with 19 kills and 17
digs. The Quakers knocked off Marymount, 3-0. Freeman and Emma Gunn both had 11 kills for Guilford and Kate Dailey set up 22 assists.

The women’s soccer team suffered a 2-0 home loss to Bridgewater Saturday.
The Quakers recognized seniors Emma Blaylock, Brittany Freyer and Ellie
Taylor on the occasion of their final home game before opening kickoff.

Guilford’s golfers regained the top spot in the Golfstat.com rankings
Wednesday. The Quakers won their second straight tournament earlier in the
week thanks to Noah Ratner’s third-place finish at the Greensboro Gordin
Classic Invitational. Ratner is ranked first in the Golfstat.com NCAA
Division III Head-to-Head Player Ratings.

Oct. 15 marked the start of basketball practices around the country and both
Guilford squads were on the hardcourts in preparation for the 2010-11
campaigns.The Quakers’ head coaches released the upcoming schedules
Thursday.
