If anybody doubts that 6’8 Jr T.J. Warren from Raleigh (Word of God) NC is a
legitimate top 50-ranked junior nationally, they were not in attendance at Rick
Lewis’ North Carolina Phenom 150 Camp, which was held over the weekend at
Forsyth Country Day School in Lewisville, NC. Warren clearly was the best
player in the camp and he is a natural scorer who can beat you both inside with
his ability to post-up around the basket and outside with his ability to square
up and hit the open three. We’d like for Warren to be tougher in the paint.
But he’s got a great bloodline (his father played at N.C. State in the mid-70’s)
and, if he continues to grow, he’ll likely project as a face-up four-man at the
big time college level. Or, if Warren improves his athleticism and speed and
quickness out on the perimeter, then wing forward will end up being his best
position. Right now Warren is a true combo forward and time is on his side, as
he’s got two more years in high school to continue to develop his game. The
other big story at the camp was group the multi-dimensional athletic
point/forwards, like 6’6 Soph Brian White from Chesterfield (Matoaca) VA, 6’6
Soph Christian Hairston from Greensboro (Day) NC, and 6’7 Jr Andrew White from
Charlottesville (The Miller School) VA, who fall into the 6’6 to 6’7 range and
are capable of playing just about any position on the court. And battling for
the fifth spot among our top five-ranked players in camp are 6’6 Soph Ryan Outar
from Charlotte (Day Prep) NC, who was more of true inside player, thanks to his
ability to score around the basket and aggressiveness of the boards; 6’3 Soph
Jalen Jones from Knightsdale (H.S.) NC, who has excellent moves to the basket,
can beat you with his outside shot, and is active on the boards; and 6’1
SophJoshua Newkirk from Raleigh (Word of God) NC, who is a strong athletic combo
guard with a knack for finishing around the basket. We also were impressed with
the shot blocking of 6’9 Soph Emeka Ikezu from Greensboro (Caldwell Academy) NC
and 6’9 Jr Chase Mounce from Lewisville (Forsyth Country Day) NC. The former is
a long athletic mobile big man who is good on the boards and very fluid around
the basket. The latter makes up for his lack of quickness and athleticism with
his surprisingly mobility, good skills, and willingness to run the court and
compete in the paint. There also was a trio of small quick point guards – 5’8
Soph Sidney Knox from Fayetteville (71st) NC, 5’9 Soph Haissan Handy from
Greenville (J.L. Mann) SC, and 5’3 Frosh Steve Robinson from Mebane (Eastern
Alamance) NC – and a trio of athletic power forwards – 6’7 Soph Nigel Holley
from Wilmington (New Hanover) NC, 6’7 Soph Dominique Byrd from Fuquay Varina
(H.S.) VA, 6’5 Soph Roderick Howell from Rock Hill (H.S.) SC, 6’7 Jr Shane
Whitfield from Bayboro (Pamlico County) NC – who separated themselves from all
of the rest. Some other players who deserve special mention are 6’6 Jr
Deojunique Flippin from Holly Springs (H.S.) NC, who combines big time
athleticism with a high energy level and the ability to slash to the basket and
drain the three; 6’3 Jr Keenan Orr from Rock Hill (Northwestern) SC, who is
versatile 2-guard with the ability to both shoot and slash; 6’4 Soph Alex
Biggerstaff from Burnsville (Mountain Heritage) NC, who is like money in the
bank when he gets his feet set and has an open look; 6’2 Soph Hayward Smith from
Simpsonville (Hillcrest) SC, who was very effective shooting off the dribble;
6’5 Jr Jacob Pifer from Boone (Watauga) NC, who impressed us with his savvy,
skills, and ability to both get to the basket and hit the three; and 6’1 Jr
Wykevin Bazemor from Windsor (Bertie) NC, who lacks a true position, but plays
hard, blocks shots, rebounds, and scores inside.

Our list of the best of the rest includes
6’4 Jr Terry Henderson from Raleigh (Neuse Christian Academy) NC,
6’7 Jr Jamaal Rhodes from Savannah (Sol C. Johnson) GA,
6’3 Frosh Hayward McCullough from Rock Hill (H.S.) SC,
6’3 Jr Zachary Davis from Charlotte (United Faith Christian) NC,
6’2 Soph Hayward Smith from Simpsonville (Hillcrest) SC,
6’4 JrDyangelo Washington from Rabun Gap (Nacoochee) GA,
6’3 Soph Jareese Cooley from Richmond (Hugenot) VA,
6’6 SophTobore Akporokah from Stone Mountain (Stephenson) GA,
6’0 Jr Brandon Bego from Mooresville (H.S.) NC,
6’2 Shai Carpenter from Mauldin (H.S.) SC,
6’3 Jr Matthew Yeargin from Mauldin (H.S.) SC,
6’0 Jr Josh McClain from Garner (H.S) NC,
6’6 SophTony Dargan from Chapin (H.S.) SC,
6’2 Jr Justin Cousin from Graham (H.S.) NC,
6’4 Kaleen Edwards from Rabun (Gap (Nacoochee) GA,
6’0 Jr Michael Hickey from Wilmington (New Hanover) NC,
6’6 Soph Tucker Crews from Kernersville (Bishop McGuiness) NC,
6’5 Jr Rob Noyes from Morganton (Freedom) NC,
6’10 Jr Matthew Uchedike from Greensboro (Caldwell County) NC,
6’3 Jr Bryce Benjamin from Leansville (Northeast Guilford) NC,
6’5 Soph Sharwyn McGee from Jamestown (Ragsdale) NC,
6’0 Jr Carlin Bremmer from Huntersville (North Mecklenburg) NC,
6’4 Jr Andrew Bostic from High Point (Southwest Guilford) NC,
6’7 Isaac Daniel from Faquay Valley (H.S.) VA,
6’4 Soph Reed Lucas from Greensboro (Day) NC,
6’7 Soph Parker Jones from Mooresville (Lake Norman) NC,
6’1 Ahmad Abdullah from Knightsdale (H.S.) NC,
and 6’1 Ridge Hodges from Washington (H.S.) NC.

We also got a chance to see one round of games in the North Carolina Phenom
Camp and we were especially impressed with the likes of 5’11 8th Grader Josh
Peacock from Raleigh, NC, 6’3 8th Grader Austin Burnett from Raleigh, NC, 5’11
8th Grader Brian Thornton from Carrboro, NC, 6’0 8th Grader Deshaw Andrews from
York, SC, and 5’6 8th Grader Elijah Gonzalez from Saylorsburg, PA, and 5’2 7th
Grader Andrew Ejofor from Raleigh, NC.

  1. How did Ryan Outar go from a 2011 in Bayside, NY to a 2013 from a Charlotte School that I’ve never heard of?

  2. Hey thanks for the review but parker jones is a 6foot 7 freshman at lake norman not a soph

  3. Sharwyn mcgee is a great player that i think should be getting more recoginition and he is a great player that people should be talking about!
