NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The Christopher Newport University football squad jumped to an early lead and defeated Greensboro College, 37-7, at POMOCO Stadium on Saturday.

CNU freshman Kentel Noel returned consecutive punts for touchdowns. The returns gave the Captains a 27-0 lead, and came from 67 and 62 yards away. Noel set a new school and conference record with five returns for 206 yards.

The Pride then responded with its lone score. Freshman QB Kall Daniel (Brookville, FL/Hernando) rushed for a 3-yard touchdown. Chad Adams (Yadkinville, NC/Forbush) made the extra point and the score remained 27-7 at halftime. The TD was preceded by a 24-yard completion from Daniel to Antwan Thorpe (Oxford, NC/Webb). Thorpe had a game-high 78 receiving yards on 5 catches.

Senior Brian Green (Stuart, FL/Martin County) had a stellar game for The Pride’s defense. He had 16 tackles, including 3.5 for losses of 19 yards. Allen Stallings (Manteo, NC/Manteo) had 8 tackles, including 5 solo stops.

“We’re a young team and we didn’t do much to help ourselves today,” said Pride Head Coach Dr. Randy Hunt. “They were able to run the ball on us and we could not move it ourselves. That puts the defense out there too long.”

Daniel was 11-22 passing and threw one interception. He was also GC’s top rusher with 23 gross yards.

The Captains out-gained the Pride, 346-112 total yards, for the day. CNU held the football for over 40 minutes of possession time and sustained drives of 76 and 77 yards to start the first and third quarters.

CNU freshman Lyndon Garner quarterback was 8 of 12 passing for 64 yards and had his first career TD throw, a 5-yard, first quarter pass to junior Justin Reidelbach.

The Captains also got scoring runs from seniors Keith Gaines and Myles Reid.

Christopher Newport improved to 3-4 overall and 3-1 atop the USA South. It was the Captains second straight victory. Greensboro has now lost six straight, and falls to 1-6 overall and 0-4 in the USA South.
