Greensborosports.com/FedEx Player of the Week and HS Check List

Last week’s winner was RB Reid Baxter from Northwest Guilford and Baxter does more than just play runningback, he also returns kicks and catches passes…..This week, we are already leaning heavily toward a pass catcher/receiver in Orlando “Junior” Hatfield, from Page, who had four touchdown receptions in the Pirates 42-22 win over Southeast Guilford, last Friday night….Any challengers for Hatfield, let us know, at andy@greensborosports.com…….

Previous weekly winners:
Daniel Downing(Northern Guilford)
Matt Pawlowski(Northwest Guilford)
Mike Fields(Southeast Guilford)
Elijah Jordan(Smith)
Drew Adams(High Point Central)
James Summers(Page)
Jamie Cunningham(Southern Guilford)
Jeff Sims(Smith)
Mycah Gaylord(Dudley)
Duke McCoy(Smith)
Reid Baxter(Northwest Guilford)

As we were talking about up top, Junior Hatfield is at the top of our list this week, after his 4 TD performance against SEG last Friday evening, at Southeast…..James Summers, the Page Pirate QB, threw all four of the TD passes to Hatfield, so he deserves some Check List credit too….Page had 134 yards passing and 175 yards rushing in the victory…Summers also had a TD run, to go along with his four TD passes…

Luke Heavner and Deshawn Shouse had very big nights for the Ragsdale Tigers in their 35-28 win over High Point Central….Shouse dropped some early passes from Heavner, but he made the catches when they counted, to the tune of two TD receptions and over 100 yards receiving on his four key catches….Big plays of 70 and 19 yards for Shouse….Heavner had the “heave ho” for 152 yards and three TD tosses for the Tigers….Senior D’onovan Smith ran for two Tiger scores and Ragsdale picked up 201 yards on the ground, versus HPC….Central’s Drew Adams passed for three TD’s himself, plus had a two-point conversion pass and he ran for another score and two of his TD strikes went to top receiver Derek Grant….

Northeast Guilford relied heavily on RB little Johnny King and “Little Johnny” came through with a “King-size effort”, in the NEG Rams win over Ledford, 42-0…..King had 189 yards rushing on 11 carries and he scored 3 touchdowns as the Rams rolled over the Panthers…King also had two interceptions from his defensive back position….Southwest Guilford saw their sophomore RB Larry Edwards rush for 145 yards, on just five carries and he scored a key TD, in the Cowboys blowout 51-7 victory over WS Parkland….

Elijah Jordan rushed for right at 200 yards and took a run in for a score on a 45-yard jaunt, but his Smith Goldend Eagles fell on the road, 20-17, at Southern Alamance….TJ Logan had 206 yards rushing for the Northern Guilford Nighthawks and Logan had two long TD runs of 80 and 66 yards, but Northern, like Smith, fell in Alamance County, 35-28 in OT to Western Alamance…..

Southern Guilford’s Darren Mitchell was their top player last week, as the defensive end led the way for the Storm, with 10 tackles and 2 sacks in the Storm’s 14-2 win over Asheboro…..We don’t have any other numbers on the SG Storm, we just have the facts on the defense, that gave up only 140 yards total offense on the night…..(75 rushing and 65 passing.)

For High Point Andrews, Marquell Cartwright rushed for 175 yards on 12 carries with 2 TD’s and Ryan Bostic hauled in two touchdown receptions, in the Raiders 39-7 win over Wheatmore…..

We could really use some more nominations for our top defensive players from last week and one name I’ll throw in here is Trey Swaim from Ragsdale….Swaim halted a key HP Central drive with a pick-six, when he stepped in front of a Drew Adams pass, and he took the Bison ball back to the end zone for a touchdown, but the points were erased, due to a penelty on the play, but Swaim had another “Big Game”, for the Tigers and we could use some more defensive highlights from last week’s games and maybe we could come up with a group of Top Eleven defenders, from last Friday night….

We also need notes on the Eastern Guilford-McMichael game, a nice win for the Wildcats and maybe some more details on SWG’s victory over Parkland, plus we don’t have anything on Dudley over Grimsley 34-0, but we were hearing that Mycah Gaylord had three TD’s and the man that just returned from injury, Demetrious McCorkle, had one TD….The Panther people are saying, that Smash and Dash are back……

  1. Mycah Gaylord had 26 carries for 221 yards and 4 touchdowns against grimsley..i talked to Gaylord and McCorkle the other day and they corrected me… they arent smash and dash…. they go by Dash(gaylord) and Flash(mccorkle)…. lol

  2. Good kids and not to be confused with the old WWF team of Axe and Smash of Demolition fame….Axe and Smash were in reality, Barry Darsow(Krusher Kruschev) and Bill Eadie(The Masked Superstar) if memory serves correctly…..
