Guilford College lands four on All-Conference soccer including “Go-to Guy Gomez”

*GUILFORD COLLEGE MEN’S SOCCER STUDENT-ATHLETES LAUDED***

**Greensboro, N.C. — *Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC)
men’s soccer coaches selected four Guilford College students to the 2010
all-league teams released Tuesday. Sophomore *Richard* *Page (**Tobaccoville,
N.C./R.J. Reynolds (Greensboro))* claimed Guilford’s first ODAC Rookie of
the Year honor in the 13-year history of the award. He* *and classmate*Freddy Gomez(**Burlington,N.C./Williams**)* garnered First Team All-ODAC recognition, marking the first time since 2004 the Quakers have had two first-team selections. Sophomore *Drew Gunter (**Kernersville, N.C./East Forsyth (UNC Wilmington))* earned Second-Team All-ODAC honors while senior *Jordan Alexander *received honorable mention.

*Page*, a 5-10 midfielder, transferred from Greensboro College
this year and quickly made an impact with his excellent presence and
shooting skills. He started all 19 games this season and totaled eight
points on three goals and two assists. *Page* scored the game-winning goal
in the Quakers’ Sept. 11 victory over Piedmont College, one of his three
games with a goal.

*Gomez*, a 5-6 midfielder, started in 17 of 18 games and led the Quakers
with 21 points on eight goals and five assists, all team highs. He ranks
second among the ODAC leaders with 1.17 points per game. His 21 points,
eight goals, five assists and 0.28 assists per game all stand third in the
league. His best performance of the year came in Guilford’s Sept. 6 match
against Chowan University where *Gomez* buried his first two goals of the
season in Guilford’s 5-0 win. He also recorded a crucial score in Guilford’s
2-1 victory over regionally ranked Lynchburg College with a breakaway goal
in the match’s fifth minute.

Through two seasons with the Quakers, *Gomez* has 19 career goals and 10
assists, the 10th-highest total in the team’s history. His 48 career points
rank ninth at Guilford. He earned first-team honors after receiving Second
Team All-ODAC recognition last season and becomes Guilford’s seventh
two-time All-ODAC pick.

*Gunter*, a 6-1 defenseman, transferred from the University of North
Carolina at Wilmington this fall and started all 19 games. He posted one
goal, two assists and a .455 shot-on-goal percentage. *Gunter’s* goal off a
set piece helped the Quakers to a 2-1 league win at Eastern Mennonite
University Oct. 9. He recorded assists Sept. 24 at Randolph College and in
the Quakers’ Oct. 25 upset of regionally ranked Lynchburg.

A 5-11 forward, *Alexander *started in nine of 17 games and finished the
year with 19 points on a team-high eight goals and three assists. He ranked
second on the team in scoring and fourth in the Old Dominion Athletic
Conference (ODAC) with 1.12 points per game. His eight goals and 0.47 goals
per game both stand third in the conference. *Alexander’s *best game this
season was in the Sept. 4 victory against Chowan when he recorded a
team-high two goals. He also scored four points the following game in
Guilford’s win over Piedmont. For his efforts, *Alexander* was named ODAC
Men’s Soccer Player of the Week Sept. 13.

In his three seasons and 49 games as a Quaker, *Alexander* compiled 46
points on 19 goals and eight assists, which ranks 10th among Guilford’s
career scoring leaders. He plans to graduate in May with a degree in
psychology.
The four students helped fifth-year head coach *Jeff
Bateson’s *team
to a 10-6-3 overall record (6-3-1 ODAC). Guilford posted its most wins in a
season since 2003 and reached the ODAC Tournament quarterfinals.
*Bateson*expects as many as 25 letter winners back in 2011, including
*Gomez*, *Gunter *and *Page*.
