High School basketball with HPCA over Caldwell Academy(Page-Southern Guilford scrimmage)

In what we thought might be close game, well it got out of hand and High Point Christian finally ran away with it, over at the Green Street Baptist Church on Phillips Avenue in High Point tonight….

High Point Christian Academy 63
Caldwell Academy 37

Mitch Oates, one of our Greensborosports.com top guards led the HPCA Cougars with 15 points, while Brandon Earnhardt added 14, Jordan Weethe 11 and Aaron Scales and C. Ogbado chipped in 6 points each….

For the Caldwell Academy Eagles, Brett Manning led the way with 10 points and then Ben Bell and Daniel Branon had 6 points a-piece and Corey Ganim posted five points for the Eagles…..

Scoring rundown….1st Quarter:HPCA 21, Caldwell 17….Halftime:HPCA 40, Caldwell 27….3rd Quarter:HPCA 50, Caldwell 33…..
FINAL:
HPCA 63
Caldwell 37….

I also had the chance to stop by over at Southern Guilford tonight on my way to High Point….The Storm girls were hosting the Page Pirates, in a girl’s basketball srimmage and Coaches William Whitaker and Debbie Jones had their ladies running with a non-stop clock and both teams showed positive signs, as this scrimmage unfolded this afternoon/tonight at SG….

Things got rolling at 6pm and as I stated in the beginning, the clock was running non-stop and so was Page at the outset….The new kid Paris Kea looked sharp and one on-looker said the shooting touch that Kea was showing tonight, had been with her since the 6th grade….Brittany Drew also was showing experience and veteran leadership qualities for the Pirates and another veteran Olivia Seegar was out of the lineup with an injury or sickness of some sort….Page also has a new assistant coach and I didn’t catch the gentleman’s name, but he was calling out some good sets and making some nice defensive changes/adjustments from over on the Page bench, where I was sitting for a few minutes….

Page looked more athletic than they have in previous seasons and Southern looks like they have some size this year and the big task for Coach Whitaker is to figure out how to use that size and when he can use it….Camille Horne is back and she can score and it looked like the SG Storm was able to get their offense clicking, once they found a way to get that lid off of their basket….The more that SG was able to score, the more the Page defensive intensity began to let up a little bit….You know how it works, the longer you can keep a team from scoring, the longer you can keep the heat turned up……Offensive denial creates stubborn players, who refuse to let their opponents get on the scoreboard….Total denial and complete team defense, leads to Conference Championships……

Page is very athletic, you can tell it from just watching them warm up and Southern is big, they just have to find a way to make that big element lead to big scores, big rebounds and big-time success on the basketball court…..The big people have to realize how to use that Big Play capablity to their advantage…..

I like what we saw today and look forward to seeing both teams in full-game, regular season action….

  1. I was also at the Page and Southern scrimmage and I think all the ladies on Page’s team did an awesome job and should be recognize for how they played. Basketball is a team sport and there is no one person that can do it all so I give props to all the ladies for a job well done and I think they will have a great season as long as they continue to play as a team.

  2. from http://www.hpe.com:

    WESTCHESTER boys 86,
    MOUNT ZION 55

HIGH POINT – Westchester Country Day stifling defense and potent offense powered it past visiting Mount Zion 86-55 Tuesday evening.

Ike Nwamu had 24 points, followed by Deuce Bello with 21 and Quincy Miller with 18. Miller also had nine rebounds and 11 blocks, while Bello added four blocks for the Wildcats (3-0).

Westchester, which led 42-29 at the half, will play Arden Christ School, ranked No. 23 nationally the USA Today, and Wilson Greenfield this weekend in the Christ School tournament. The Cougars will face the Greenies Friday at 8 p.m.

  3. Looking at coming with possibly three different boys polls and girls poll starting the week after Thanksgiving or around Dec. 1….

  4. Mostly the private schools so far and we have a full list of many players here in the site about three posts back from this one called, Keep your eyes on the prize and watch out for these guys this season…

    Check it out…

  5. The two kids, Matthew Uchedike and Emeka will get better….They are both diamonds in the rough, but they are both tall and they are still learning their moves around the basket and they will get better….They are living with the Rocky Manning family and believe me, by staying with Rocky they will learn basketball….Rocky is very tough and he will not overdo it with these kids…He will bring them along and help them….

He was still working with them from the stands during the game the other night….Especially on their free throw shooting and being tall kids they will draw a lot of fouls and get to the line quite often….Three dribbles and not four, bends the knees, release and follow-through on your shots….

This is a work in progress and it will take some time, as all projects like this do….But this is positive project and they will see it through and there’s no telling how good these kids might end up being if they keep on working hard….There is a big upside to this deal as they say…..

Pearce Landry is also working with many of the Caldweill kids as he has the time and he has little ones there at the school too…Pearce from Page HS and UNC…..

On another quick Emeka……What about Emeka Okafor? Wasn’t that one of the dummbest moves in pro basketball history, when the Charlotte send him away to the New Orleans Hornets for Tyson Chandler? Now the Bobcats are trying to work on a reclamation project with Kwame Brown in the middle and the Hornets have lost one game all season and Okafor is still one of the best double-double men in the business…..

One of the dumbest trade moves ever…….Okafor was such a hard worker and he didn’t seem to mind not being in the spotlight….Gerald Wallace, Stephen Jackson, Tyrus Thomas, DJ Augustine or Raymond Felton and Okafor….What more could you ask for? Great move Bobcats front office…..You went out and brought back Matt Carroll, go get Okafor……
