The community suffers a loss: Gone…Ed “The Boss” Ross

A good man that did a lot of work in the community; coaching Greensboro Parks and Recreation youth baseball teams, promoting softball and baseball tournaments, coaching in the YMCA youth basketball leagues, promoting and refereeing professional wrestling matches at several local venues…Mr. Ed “The Boss” Ross was a trailblazer, among those who have ventured out onto the local sports scene….Many talk and share their ideas and never put them into practice, but Ross rolled the dice and others came out a winner, due to his efforts….Many will remember Ross and the wild looks that used to come across his good-natured face and that face will no longer be in the sports place, but Ed Ross will long have his place in “Local Sports History” and will be a part of the local sports lore for many more, years to come….

  1. I remember Ed as a frequent caller to the various incarnations of the Jock Lobattamata, uh, Andy Durham radio shows over the years. “Hello, guys.” I’ll always remember his reports on the local sports teams he volunteered to help. He was a good and decent man.

  2. Well said and I think Ed’s shining moment may have been the night he brought professional wrestling to the Bob Sawyer Gymnasium on the Grimsley HS campus….That night would have to rank up there among the tops…..Tops and bottom ropes for that matter….Can anyone come up with one that might top that Buddy Landel blessing, on our city and our local school’s dressing room doors…..

  3. Saw The Boss as a wrestling Ref a few times. New his voice on the radio. Sorry to hear of his passing.

Did that wrasslin include Diamond Dan Grondy and The Hardy Brothers before they were The Hardys ? And that’s NATURE BOY BUDDY LANDEL

  4. Yes, I too was at that night of wrestling glory. And Jeff Hardy wrestled as the Will Of The Wisp under the hood. And I am positive Diamond Dan was wrestling that night. I was sitting with his two kids on the front row.
Ed “The Boss” Ross was one of the refs and I remember he had a problem with the evil “Bamm Bamm” Coleson. Ed took a heavy handed slam that night and we all feared he was hurt really bad. But pro wresting is a real magic show and Ed fooled us all.
The Jock and Jimmy Show on WKEW was really a lot of fun back in the 1980s.And Ed was a big part of that. I will never forget the night, the Tarheel Fans and the Duke fans werer raising cain and everything became very very heated.
Then Ed would call with the huge news that at Grimsley there was going to be an checker tournament.
Moments like that can never be replaced, pretty much like Ed Ross.

  5. Ahh..what memories!! I got a chuckle reading Undercover John’s post & can still remember The Boss’s worried expression on his face when it was suggested that he take a slam from the Bammer & afterwards Ed back in the dressing room trying to stretch his back out saying that it felt “a little stiff”:):)…Rumors persisted that there may have been some special emphasis on the slam….we’ll leave those as rumors for now:):)

I, too, remember Ed “The Boss” Ross on those magical WKEW/Jock Labottamotta/Andy Durham shows & Ed was always very nice to me & was a good man! He will be missed!! Prayers will go up today for his family!!

  6. I too remember Ed “the Boss” Ross from those nights he refereed matches at Plato’s Crash Landing. He was a better ref that that other guy, George What’s-His-Name. And it was a night that would etched in Greensboro Wrestling history when Ed’s feet left the mat at Grimsley, courtesy of BammBamm. And words can’t describe the enjoyment people got when Ed would call Jim Pritchett’s show on WKEW to talk sports.

  7. The GSO community has truly lost a nice guy in Ed “the Boss” Ross. A regular caller on the old “Off the Wall” and “Andy Durham Sports Show” days, Ed would often add his unusual flair for sports updates and commentary. He was a constant supporter and promoter of the local sports scene as well as a classly caller who never let his conversation stoop to base comments. His voice — and presence — will be greatly missed in the Triad. Thank you for bringing some humor and fun to the Greensboro Sports Scene, Ed. You were truly one of the good guys.
