Greensborosports.com/FedEx Player of the Week and Check List

This week we are going to go with quarterback Rocco Scarfone, from the Northern Guilford Nighthawks….Scarfone completed 9 of 12 passes, for 227 yards and two touchdowns, in the Nighthawks’ Round Four Eastern NCHSAA 3-AA Championship win, 28-20, over the Wilson Hunt Warriors, last Friday night in Wilson….Scarfone will lead his Nighthawks into Raleigh’s Carter-Finley Stadium on Saturday night, where they will face the Crest Chargers, for the NCHSAA 3-AA State Championship…

Previous weekly winners:
Daniel Downing(Northern Guilford)
Matt Pawlowski(Northwest Guilford)
Mike Fields(Southeast Guilford)
Elijah Jordan(Smith)
Drew Adams(High Point Central)
James Summers(Page)
Jamie Cunningham(Southern Guilford)
Jeff Sims(Smith)
Mycah Gaylord(Dudley)
Duke McCoy(Smith)
Reid Baxter(Northwest Guilford)
Orlando Hatfield(Page)
Justin Briley(Ragsdale)
Merritt Blanks(High Point Central)
TJ Logan(Northern Guilford)

Rocco Scarfone(Northern Guilford)

Scarfone’s TD passes last Friday night went to Maurice Harris and TJ Logan….Harris and Logan are both on the Check List again this week….Harris had the TD catch in the corner and he also had a key interception at the 1-yard line to stave off an important Hunt scoring threat, that took Wilson out of the hunt, for the end zone….Harris has made many big plays this season for the Nighthawks, but none any bigger than the two he made last Friday night to help the team earn the right to play for the State Championship….

Logan took the first play from scrimmage and turned it into a 70-yard touchdown run, as he sped down the right sideline and on to the promised land for six points….Logan later scored on his 76-yard screen pass from Rocco Scarfone and it was on to 224 yards of total offense on the night, with 148 of those coming on the ground….Logan was a busy man and he has been over the past several weeks, as the Nighthawks have gone deep into the playoffs….Daniel Downing had another big night for Northern with his 13-yard TD run for a score and he also connected on several key passes from the QB postition, along with his punting duties and defensive assignments….

On the Check List for the Northern defense we need to list DB’s Tre Purcell and Mohammed Khellah, linebackers Alan Hart and Mark Mitchell and Stephen Machanic up front…….Those kids did a super job on defense and they came up with key plays and big hits that kept their team in the game at all times last Friday night…..Bob Hicks and his offensive line mates also deserve mention as they opened up the quick holes and allowed TJ Logan to get up field in a hurry to spark the team to the win….

We will begin voting on our Player of the Year next week…..

  1. Congrats to all the Fed Ex players of the week. All have done an outstanding job this year.
If I may cast my vote early for Player of the Year it would be hands down Rocco Scarfone
from NG. He was hurt early in the year but came back to lead NG to their first State Championship game. I am sure some will disagree but his stats speak for themselves.
he plays both ways and is headed to ECU next year to play DB.
