Greensboro College women’s basketball moves to (8-0) behind Duncan(Ragsdale) and Pickard(Page)

Maryville, Tenn. — Danielle Duncan (Greensboro, NC/Ragsdale) scored 22 and freshman Chevena Pickard (Greensboro, NC/Page) added 21 points as Greensboro College won at Maryville College, 72-61, on Wednesday afternoon. The Pride used a big second half rally to remain unbeaten (8-0) on the year.

Duncan was 7-10 from the field and made 8-9 free throws. Pickard was 5-9, made two 3-pointers and converted 9-10 from the charity stripe. GC made 25-31 (81-percent) on free throws.

Maryville led 31-26 at halftime. Paige Sevier made a 3-pointer to give the Scots a 46-35 advantage with 13:36 left in regulation. Yet with 1:17 left, a Pickard free throw put The Pride ahead 70-55. GC outscored the Scots 36-9 over that 12:19 period.

“When we were down by 11, I told our team not to get down because there was a lot of time left,” said GC Head Coach Randy Tuggle. “We played good defense down the stretch and didn’t allow them many second chances, which made a huge difference.”

The Pride won the battle of the boards, 41-22. GC Freshman Jada Alvarado (Burlington, NC/River Mill Academy) grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds. Bianca Richburg (Hillsborough, NC/Orange County) had 11 points for Greensboro.

The visitors shot 22-47 (47-percent) to 21-52 (40-percent) for the Scots. Sevier had a team-best 19 points for Maryville (5-3). MC made 11 of 24 3-pointers.

“It feels great to go into the new year undefeated,” Tuggle said. “We can enjoy this and look forward to getting back to work after the holiday.”
