Pizza Hut Invitational Awards Bill Lee Scholarships

GREENSBORO SPORTS COUNCIL AWARDS ANNUAL BILL LEE SCHOLARSHIPS DURING PIZZA HUT INVITATIONAL

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Four Greensboro high school students were awarded the Bill Lee Scholarships during the 35th annual Pizza Hut Invitational presented by NewBridge Bank, it was announced today. The Greensboro Sports Council awards the $2,000 scholarships during this annual high school basketball tournament.

The winners will receive their formal awards during today’s Bill Lee Scholarship Reception at 4:45 p.m. at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex. Following the women’s championship game this evening, the winners will be introduced on the Greensboro Coliseum arena floor.

The Bill Lee Memorial Scholarship was established by the Greensboro Sports Council following Lee’s death in 2001. Lee was a Greensboro native and resident who was a major supporter of local sports. He was deeply involved with Greensboro’s minor league baseball efforts, basketball and golf. Recipients are nominated by the schools participating in the Pizza Hut Invitational presented by NewBridge Bank each year, and the Greensboro Sports Council awards the scholarships. Each nomination is considered with the following criteria: 40% academic, 40% athletic and 20% civic. Four student-athletes receive a scholarship each year; the following winners bring the total number of scholarships awarded to 36. The amount of the scholarships increased to $2,000 this year.

Taylor Barker, Northeast Guilford High School: plays basketball and volleyball; four-year varsity letter winner; Coach’s Award; Parks Scholarship candidate; Beta Club; National Honor Society Board member; Volunteers for church, Big Sweep, Angel Food, Red Cross and Monticello Athletics; considering attending college at Elon University, NC State University and Wake Forest University.

Brittany Drew, Page High School: plays basketball and runs track; two-year basketball captain; All-Conference, All-Metro 4A Team; three-year varsity letter winner; National Honor Society; vice-president of Smart Club; volunteers for Operation Smile, Greensboro Youth Council, Middle School Basketball Camp, Greensboro Urban Ministry and Hayes Taylor YMCA; considering attending college at UNC-Wilmington, UNC-Charlotte and Wake Forest University.

Andrew Magod, Greensboro Day School: team captain, John F. Johnson Scholar Athlete Award winner; Headmaster’s List; National Honor Society; outstanding achievement in world history, French literature and Algebra II; volunteers for First Presbyterian Church, Habitat for Humanity, National Student Leadership Conference, People of Color Conference and Mission trips to Washington, D.C., Atlanta and Arkansas; considering attending college at UNC-Chapel Hill, Wake Forest University and the University of Georgia.

Diana Nguyen, Greensboro Day School: three-sport athlete, Brad Starr Award winner; four-year varsity letter winner; Kirby Scholar for five years; senior class president; Headmaster’s List; National Honor Society; outstanding achievement in Latin I and II, Algebra II, Social Science, World History and Freshman Literature & Composition; volunteers for Counselor in Training for New Gardens Friends Summer Camp, Jesse Wharton Elementary, Youth Tutoring Greensboro and AAU Basketball Tournament; considering attending college at UNC-Chapel Hill, the University of Virginia and the University of Georgia.

The Pizza Hut Invitational presented by NewBridge Bank is an annual high school basketball tournament in Greensboro, N.C. Founded in 1976 as the Little 4 Invitational, the tournament features men’s and women’s teams representing eight Guilford County high schools playing at the Greensboro Coliseum Complex. One hundred percent of tournament proceeds are donated to local charities and the participating schools; the Pizza Hut Invitational is planned and implemented by the Greensboro Sports Council.

    playing court.

  2. Another missed opportunity for Dudley and its student-athletes: a scholarship.

    So, let’s get this right on what DHS is missing.
    -$10K per year in a tough economic times.
    -An opportunity to showcase its programs before many who only got to the PHI.
    -An opportunity for its teams, cheerleaders, fans, etc. to be a part of a great community event.

    Give me a break about the chance to play somewhere else. There’s always an opportunity to play in out of town tournaments, on other dates.

    The idea that “Dudley is doing just fine without the PHI” is short-sighted and like the kid taking his ball and going home.
