Luqman Tijani(Page HS) leads GC Pride to first win over Maryville since ’95: Sam Hanger last Greensboro coach to take down the Scots

Greensboro, N.C. — Luqman Tijani (Greensboro, NC/Page ) scored 19 points and three other Greensboro College players scored in double digits as The Pride beat Maryville, 83-67, on Sunday. The win was just third over the Scots in 22 tries, and the first since 1995.

Tijani was 8-12 from the field and had three assists. Adam Powell (Stuart, FL/Jensen Beach ) had 16 points, Daren Dexter (Sarasota, FL/Riverview) added 13 and TJ Holman contributed 11 for the green and white.

The Pride improved to 5-5 and Maryville is now 7-7. The home team led 39-34 at the break.

Eryk Watson poured in a game-best 22 points for Maryville. GC won the battle of the boards, 40-37. The Pride forced 16 turnovers and committed 13 miscues. GC shot 51-percent (29-57) to 39-percent (24-62) for the visitors.

Coach Bryan Galuski is the first coach since Sam Hanger to defeat Maryville. Previous coaches Bill Chambers, Eddie Payne, Lynn Ramage, and Rusty LaRue were winless against the Scots.

“I thought we did a good job pressuring them and creating turnovers,” Galuski said. “We played within ourselves and it was a good team win.”

GC hosts Covenant on Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.
