SRO as Greensboro College defeats Nation’s fifth-ranked team: Pride women stop CNU, 65-61…

It was a packed house this afternoon, Standing Room Only, as the Greensboro College women topped #5 Christopher Newport University in the Hanes Gym, on the Greensboro College campus…..

Greensboro College 65
Christopher Newport University 61

GC(16-0/10-0) CNU(15-2/9-1)

This was the first time ever, that Greensboro College had hosted a game involving two nationally ranked women’s basketball teams……This had to be one of the biggest and best games in not only Greensboro College histoy, but in the history of basketball in the city of Greensboro……There were as many people at this game as there were for the Greensboro College-Guilford College men’s game a few years back….This is a real tribute to Coach Randy Tuggle and his women’s basketball program at Greensboro College….To see this many fans at a women’s game, shows that Athletic Director Jean Lojko and her assistant Bob Lowe are doing the job, reaching out to the community and bringing the fans on to the Greensboro College campus to see a winning women’s program….There was a girl’s team from Aycock Middle School there today and that was just one of many groups represented at today’s contest…..

Greensboro College scoring:(Very balanced) Danielle Duncan 14 points…..Adrienne Terrell 14 points….Nikki Wilborn 10 points….Samantha Greene 9 points…Bianca Richburg 8 points….Chevena Pickard 7 points……Hillary Cook 2 points…Jada Alvarado 1 point…..Numbers unofficial and we will have more later on from Bob Lowe…….

Duncan(Ragsdale HS) was a powerhouse and a very smart player on the inside and she controlled the lane and the area 2 feet around the basket….Nikki Wilborn (Graham HS) was very quick and she helped establish the tempo for this game anlong with Terrell….Pickard from Page HS, was hustling all the court and nearly got knocked unconcious one time, while diving for a loose ball…….

from Greensboro College sports information:

Greensboro, N.C. — Greensboro College defeated #5 CNU, 65-61, at Hanes Gym on Sunday. The Pride, ranked 21st in the nation, improved to 16-0 and 10-0 in USA South games.

Andrienne Terrell (Omaha, NE/Decatur) scored 14 points and dished 11 assists and Danielle Duncan (Greensboro, NC/Ragsdale) had 14 points and 13 rebounds for GC. Nikki Wilborn (Graham NC/Graham) added 10 points for the home team.

“This was a total team effort and I’m very proud of my team,” said Pride Head Coach Randy Tuggle. “We stuck with–and executed–our game plan. All 10 players who got in the game contributed positively for us.”

The Captains made the first basket of the game, but GC led for the final 37:40 of the contest. Greensboro led 31-27 at the break. The Pride’s biggest lead was 50:38 with 8:19 remaining.

As expected, the highly touted Captains made a late run. Three-time CNU All American Cheslie Schweers (game-high 20 points) made a three-pointer with 1:08 left that cut the deficit to 62-57. Schweers then hit an off-balance jumper just short of the three-point line to cut the margin to 62-59 with 46 seconds remaining, but the visitors got no closer.

The game was played before a Hanes Gym crowd of 750. It was GC’s “Pride Packs the Place” for basketball and the game was the first ever women’s hoops game between ranked teams at GC.

Kimmy Hopkins added 10 points for CNU (15-2, 9-1). The two rivals play again on Feb. 19 in Newport News, Va.

The Pride next hosts Methodist on Friday night.
