Southwest Guilford Cowboys edge NWG in a dogfight at Southwest(Cowboys now 12-4/5-0)

After the break for exams, these two conference opponents came out looking to bring
some noise back to the building. It was a back and forth battle that went down to
the final second. Southwest got up by as many as 7 in the second quarter 20-13. The
visiting Vikings went on a 9-0 run to take their first lead 22-20 since being up
2-0. The Cowboys then scored 6 straight in a heartbeat but then it went tit for tat
as the halftime score was 29-28 with the home squad holding the slimmest of leads.
The second half was a similar tale with the Cowboys going up by as many as 10 in the
second half a couple of times, but Northwest would not go away. In a dogfight that
was relentless, the Cowboys were able to knock down a pair of clutch free-throws to
put the lead to 62-57. After matching missed shots, Northwest hit an amazing off
handed, off balanced 3 pointer with 1 second left to make the final talley at 62-60.
The Cowboys remain undefeated in the conference at 5-0 and are 12-4 on the season.
The Vikings were lead by Keaton Haack’s 21 points and several strong dunks. The
Cowboys were lead by Terrell Leach’s 23 points.

  1. Still up in the air, so just keep an eye out on your box scores…The one Coble kid, Drew, has been playing well for NWG….

  2. My hat is off for the point guard at NWG. With all the injuries on the team he is being double teamed full court the entire game and still manages to get the ball up court and make some great passes. The kid would be awsome with some additional talent around him.

  3. One kid that hasn’t gotten much recognition at NWG is the soph. Hylton. Solid player with strong moves to the basket and can shoot. He hit the offhanded 3 last night. He can drop 20 on anybody given the opportunity. The big man Haack played with an injured finger but was tenacious under the basket. He gets better with every game. NWG has some talent but doesn’t take advantage of it most of the time. Their system doesn’t allow them to score in transition so they miss out on easy baskets. Open the offense up a little and their record most likely be different.

  4. I voted for Hylton for the Pizza Hut Invitational All-Tournament team…..The kid has a great outside shot and he is deadly….Haack is very deceiving. He is one of the best jumpers/leepers around…..

  5. SWG-FAN, are you talking about the guard Ryan Doerr? I think that he is the off-guard; but he is normally the one having to bring the ball up the court about 75% of the time. When the other team is pressing, which SWG did last night; he is the one that brings it up. He also plays great defense and will defend against lay-ups; not just let the other team go in wide open. This team could finish good but everybody has to play defense. Some on it, don’t want to step up on DEFENSE!
