In picking up win #800 in his high school basketball coaching career last night, Greensboro Day School coach Freddy Johnson says he gives the credit for his success at GDS to his mentor, Mac Morris and to all his assistant coaches over the years and to all the players that have come through the program, out on Lawndale Drive….
The “Home of the Bengals” would not be home to 800 wins for Coach Johnson, who has spent his entire career at GDS, if not for the knowledge of the game, that Coach Morris has shared with Johnson over the years…..Coach Johnson said he was studying under Coach Morris even while he was still in college, at Greensboro College and Coach Morris was just starting to break in, in a very big way at Page High School, with the Pirates….
Morris in the words of Freddy Johnson is, “the best coach in the history of high school basketball in the state of North Carolina…..Nobody knew the game or even knows it today, like Mac Morris does”…..
Many players have walked up and down and the steps at Greensboro Day and it goes without saying, that without them, Coach Johnson would not be where he is today and that is, “looking for win #801 against Westchester Country Day, at WCD tonight”…..
Current assistant coaches Steve Shelton, Jeff Smith, Johnny Richardson and Robert Johnson have played a huge part in what Coach Johnson has been able to do and the same can be said for the coaches that have worked in the program since day one, when Coach Freddy Johnson first got going…Ken Allen, Keith Gatlin and the list goes on, when you look at all the coaches that have cut their teeth at GDS….
But when you look back, the coaching standard was started by Mac, Mac Morris…..Mac Morris is now helping former Pirate Pearce Landry with a youth team over at Caldwell Academy and when you look back and study the stack, it is still Mac, that’s Mac Morris, making a difference even today…..
