Southern Virginia University takes doubleheader from Guilford on Saturday at McBane Field

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Southern Virginia Knights banged out 27 hits and
received two complete games from their pitchers in earning a double header
sweep over the Guilford College Quakers Saturday afternoon at McBane Field.

Errors did in the Quakers in the opener, as seven of the first eight runs
scored by the Knights were unearned. After Derek Hardison’s sacrifice fly in
the first inning gave Guilford a 1-0 lead, Southern Virginia scored the next
11 runs, with four in the third inning, three in the fourth and four more in
the fifth en route to a 14-4 win.

A two-run homer in the fourth inning by Jake Johnson chased Guilford starter
Sammy Stuart. Alex Pecevich ended the Southern Virginia rally in the fourth
inning, but was unable to escape the next frame, as his error led to four
more runs, two of which were unearned.

Kyle Wooden led the Quakers on offense with a double and a run scored in the
sixth inning and a sacrifice fly in the seventh. He also reached base via a
hit by pitch and finished the game 1-2.

Freshman Britt Dalton picked up the win for the Knights. He scattered eight
hits, walked one and fanned three in the complete-game win.

It looked like the Quakers were going to earn a split in the nightcap. Jordan
Slate scored two runs and helped stake starter Borja Jones-Berasaluce to a
4-1 lead after five innings. But the Knights bunched together three hits
and a run in the top of the sixth and coach Nick Black went to the bullpen
with two outs and two runners on.

Micah Denny came on and hit the first batter he faced to load the bases and
then surrendered a three-run triple to eighth-place hitter Mitch Stevenson.
In all Southern Virginia sent 11 men to the plate and tallied seven runs in
the inning and went on to a 9-4 win.

After giving up three runs in the first three innings, Knights starter Jake
Johnson settled down to allow just one more run over the final four. He
allowed 11 hits but gave up just four runs as the Quakers left runners on
base in six of the seven innings, stranding 10 baserunners in all.

Four players recorded two hits apiece for the Quakers. Ben Esser and Travis
Starbuck each had two hits and an RBI, to join Wooden and Slate as hitting
stars for Guilford.

The Quakers return to action Sunday(TODAY) when they take on Averett.

  1. They lost again today 10-7
I was wondering the same thing as that puts them at 1-5

    Averett…………. 010 042 210 – 10 10 0
    Guilford………… 000 007 000 – 7 13 1

  2. I do not think Guilford has had a good baseball team in a few years. It is really hard to get top notch players because of the cost and the number of schools recruiting the same players from this area. I think most of the players are from out of state. Keep in mind that DIII can not give scholarships. That is no excuse because most of the teams they play are in the same situation. I was out there last week and they’re field was in awful shape.

  3. This is not about coaching!!!!! This team cat catch it, throw it or hit it very well. They are bigger and stronger than a high school tea, but not as good as a mediocre high school team. Very bad baseball to watch even for this early in the year.

  4. I hope if they get a new oach they will get someone local. We have some local coaches that ould do a good job there. I do not think the pay is a lot

  5. Eddie, it is alittle to do with coaching because he recruits those kids who can t catch….look at Methodist, CNU,lynchburg, nc wesleyan and when greensboro had rash and carlyle they won so its got something to do with coaching
