NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Guilford College’s indoor track and field teams turned
in record-setting performances Saturday at the Vince Brown Invitational at
the Freeman Center. The Quakers’ men set four new standards, while the women
had three record-setting marks.

Chad Norton shaved over 40 seconds off the Quakers’ 3,000-meters record with
his third-place clocking of 8:48.75 in a 24-man race. He had the best time
among NCAA Division III runners. David Cason (Clemmons, N.C./West Forsyth) set the 800 record with his time of 2:02.79 and Omari Tait (Greensboro,
N.C./Page) set a new triple jump record with his leap of 11.83 meters that
placed 13th among 18 contestants.
The Quakers’ distance medley relay team trimmed the school record from 11:44.13 to 10:55.02.

Sprinter Johnathan Smith turned in two other top performances at the meet.
The rookie from Conyers, Ga., placed seventh in the 60-meter dash with a
time of 7.02 seconds. He finished seventh in the race and was the lone
Division III sprinter to qualify for the final. His time missed his own
school record by two-hundredths of a season. Smith also had the best
Division III time in the 200 meter dash (23.16) with the second-fastest time
in school history.

Guilford’s Derick Kosgei was third among 14 runners in the 5,000 meters. His
time of 15:39.97 was tops among Division III runners and the second-best
time in Guilford history.

On the women’s side, rookie Taylor Stokes (Advance, N.C./Davie County) took
21st among 42 runners in the mile with a Guilford-record time of 5:34.92.
She had the second-best NCAA Division III time in the field. Stokes also set
a school standard in the 3,000 meters with a time of 11:00.38, some 29
seconds than her previous record set Jan. 29.

Freshman Judia Holton added a few inches to her school record in the weight
throw with a toss of 10.77 meters (35’4”).

The Quakers track and field teams are in action Feb. 25 at the Old Dominion
