Guilford College runner Norton, leads the pack on the track and in the classroom

*GREENSBORO, N.C. –* Guilford College’s *Chad Norton (Walled Lake,
Mich./Walled Lake)* earned Guilford’s Student-Athlete of the Week Award
Monday, presented by the school’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC).

*Norton*, a freshman, set the Guilford school record in the 3,000-meter race
with an 8:48.70 at the Vince Brown Invitational in Newport News, Va. He
placed third overall among 24 runners and finished with the fastest time
among Division III contestants. He beat the previous school standard by
40.69 seconds, set by teammate *Derick Kosgei* in 2010. Half an hour later,
*Norton *ran a leg on Guilford’s distance medley relay team that shattered
the previous school standard by 49.11 seconds. The team placed fifth with a
time of 10:55.02.

*Norton’s* only other race of the indoor season was a 5,000-meter run at the
Liberty Open in Lynchburg, Va., where he ran a 15:52.54, good for second on
the team this year. In the 2010 cross country season, *Norton* placed
12thin the NCAA DIII South/Southeast Regional 8k race with a
personal-best 26:00 to earn All-South Region honors. He was also a First Team All-Old Dominion Athletic Conference (ODAC) selection.

Coach *Bill Cason’s* Quakers travel to Lynchburg, Va., Feb. 25, to compete
in the ODAC Indoor Championships.

The Student-Athlete of the Week Award is presented by Guilford’s SAAC, which
is comprised of representatives from each of the school’s 20 varsity teams.
The group meets regularly to discuss the state of Guilford Athletics and
seeks to build community among Guilford’s student-athletes and
non-student-athletes. Recent Guilford SAAC activities include a cancer
awareness promotions, canned-food drives, volunteer assistance with the
North Carolina Special Olympics and tutoring at New Garden Friends School.
