Little Sammy Grooms might be the point guard that North Carolina is looking for

I remember him well……Little Sammy Grooms, starting as a freshman for the Smith Golden Eagles. He was in the backcourt the night I was doing the radio game for Smith versus Dudley, at N.C. A&T….Sammy started for Smith as a ninth-grader and then later went on to play and start for Northeast Guilford as a 10th and 11th grader and aftter that he was on his way up 29 North, headed toward The Miller School in Charlottesville, Virginia, with a stop along the way at a new prep school that was opening up in Danville…(I believe that Little Sammy wore the #1 on his back while at Smith, just like Sam Hunt does for Dudley today, or might have been #11 for Little Sammy…..)

Now they say that Little Sammy Grooms is at a junior college out in Oklahoma, or Texas, or somehwhere and the word up in the Big Picture, is that Little Sammy might be ready to fall in line, as the next backup or even starting point guard at the University of North Carolina, of all places….

I saw the piece on Sammy in today’s N&R and it was coming out of the Winston-Salem Journal and I went looking for it, in hopes of getting Sammy some more pub, but no avail finding that piece on-line for linking purposes right now…..Lincoln’s Birthday or President’s Day is coming up soon, so I may have an inside track on linking it up by then….

Until then, all we can do is to think back to Little Sammy Grooms, back when he played for Smith and then he headed out to Northeast Guilford, for a while….While at NEG, he also briefly teamed with Ishmael Hinson, who was also at Smith for about a year and I think Ish might have spent some short-term time at Grimsley, or that may have been his brother Brent, who is now the Middle School coach for the Guilford Tigers…….

Little Sammy, give it a shot and see what you can do with those Heels….And Little Sammy, you’re not that little any more, but how tall are you? The article today didn’t say and that is one thing that we look at closely, when choosing our point guards or any guard, for that matter…..

  1. From what I have read online he is at Chipola College in Marianna, Fla.
He is getting a lot of interest from many schools. They list him at 6’1″ or 6’2″ and about 200 lbs.

  2. He would be a great fit for any ACC program because of how well he plays the game. Saw him in highschool and he was by far the best guard in the city. Which he had stayed at Northeast. Roy needs to lock this kid in.
