Nobody’s Perfect: Greensboro College Women suffer first loss of the season at Christopher Newport

Newport News, Va. — Greensboro College’s undefeated season came to an end at Christopher Newport on Saturday. The Captains defeated The Pride, 61-48, to close the USA South regular season.

The Pride is now 24-1, 17-1 and will be the top seed in next week’s USA South tournament. GC entered the game ranked 10th in the nation. CNU was #13. The Pride loss ended the 13th longest win streak (24 games) in NCAA Division III history.

“We didn’t shoot or play very well today,” said GC Head Coach Randy Tuggle. “We didn’t play the team basketball–on offense and defense–that got us here. Even so, we were in the game late and we’re proud to be USA South regular season champions, and to be the top seed in the conference tournament.”

Danielle Duncan (Greensboro, NC/Ragsdale) paced the visitors with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Nikki Wilborn (Graham NC/Graham) also had a double-double with 10 points and 11 boards. Chevena Pickard (Greensboro, NC/Page) tallied 12 points, and fellow freshman Jada Alvarado (Burlington, NC/River Mill Academy) grabbed a game-best 13 rebounds for the green and white.

Cold shooting felled The Pride. Greensboro was 19-73 from the field for a season-low 26-percent. CNU shot 39-percent (25-64).

The Captains led 26-23 at halftime. Greensboro won the battle of the boards 49-48.

Barbara Davis led CNU with 19 points. The Captains (22-3, 16-2) will be the #2 seed in the conference tournament.

GC hosts a USA South tournament quarterfinal game on Tuesday night.
