Numbers on Smith-Page game from Friday night with Golden Eagles as Metro Tournament Champions

Smith topped Page to win the Metro 4-A Conference Tournament Championship, at Dudley HS on Friday night, and if you had to pick an MVP for Smith in the tourney, it would have to be Tracy Gathings….

Gathings had 24 points and 15 rebounds for Smith in the Golden Eagles’ 56-55 victory over the Page Pirates….Gathings pumped in 19 points and collected 14 rebounds in the Smith win over Grimsley back on Thursday evening, in the tournament’s semifinal round….

Elsewhere for Smith, in the Championship game on Friday night, no other Eagle hit double-digits, but Darian Jones found the way to the basket for 8 points, while Cameron Woods added 6 points and three assists, plus Drew Williams, Adrian Wimbush and JT Williams helped out the cause with 5 points each….Tyreik Kearse hit a three pointer for the Golden Eagles to account for all of his scoring on the night…..

The Page Pirates were led by Frankie Eaves 14 points, Bryson Fonville had 12 points, Jackson Kent hit for 9 pts., James Summers and Justin Conner had 8 each and Ryan Johnson chipped in 4 points…..

Page was 4-15 from three-point range and Smith didn’t really set the woods on fire from long distance either, going 2-9 outside the arc…..Page at 26.7% for the game from three-point land and Smith was at 22.2% from behind the line….

At the foul line, it was a different story all together with Page hitting 9-13 free throws(69.2%) and Smith struggled at the charity stripe shooting just 33.3%, ending up 6-18 at the free throw line for the game….

For the game, it was Smith at 50% from the field, with 24-48 their stock on the night, but the Eagles go 33.3% from the foul line and 22.2% from 3-point range…..The Smith Golden Eagles out-rebounded Page 30-22, with 10 of those 30 boards, a third of them coming on the offensive glass, giving Smith second and third scoring possiblities, on numerous possessions….

Page out-scored Smith 31-28 in the second half, but the Pirates were down by 4, 28-24 at the break, all leading to the Golden Eagles of Smith winning this ballgame, 56-55….

Page had two James Summers free throw attempts come up short in the last minute, after Summers grabbed the rebound off a Pirate miss and after Summers missed shot number two, Page got the rebound and went for another three-point shot and it missed and Smith had the ball, but the Eagles were on the end line, so Page got the ball back again, and they went for one more three-point shot and it missed too and then Smith got the rebound with about 3 seconds left and guard Cameron Woods snagged the ball from the boards and raced up the court headed the other way on his speed dribble, as time expired and this game was really over……Woods held that ball tightly even after this game was complete…..He might hang on to that ball, until sometime Monday night, when Smith plays their first game of the playoffs……

Real big-time congrats, to Coach Brian Jones and his Smith Golden Eagle basketball boys and when you look at those numbers again, you just can’t help but be amazed when you look at what Tracy Gathings was able to do on Friday night……

Gathings with 24 points, 15 rebounds, with 6 of those boards coming on the offensive glass…..Gathings went 12-16 from the field, he was 0-1 from the foul line and he had 1 assist, to go along with his one big block…..A productive night for Gathings and his Smith Golden Eagles…..

Smith will be at home for Round One of the NCHSAA sectionals on Monday night versus Davie County and then after that, they will continue to take it all in, “One Game at a time”…..

Keep flying high Smith Golden Eagles and make the most of your new-found success…..

  4. I am sooooooo proud of the smith basketball team. I come to every game. I’ve followed the basketball and football teams at smith since 2004. It’s been a long time since Smith athletics have played as well as they have this year. Last night, no one could outrebound Tracy, Drew is the fastest thing down the court, but all the guys played well. They stayed focused. Even with the multiple timeouts Smith was forced to call, they didn’t get flustered. I enjoyed watching the guys celebrate after the game last night. CONGRATULATIONS and enjoy going to the playoffs!
