Whirlies’ Dervish Continues as Grimsley takes out SWG Cowboys at “The Ranch”…

Courtesy of Greg Vlazny Southwest Guilford and we want to thank Greg for his fine work that he has sent us all season from “The Ranch”, at SWG….

In the second round of the 4A West playoff bracket, the Whirlies of Grimsley faced
off the hosting Cowboys of Southwest Guilford. The game opened up with Grimsley
scoring the first 4 points as the home squad struggled to score. Then in a quick
spurt they tied it back up at 4. But then the Whirlies used a 12-2 run to open the
game up to 16-6 after the first 8 minutes. In the second quarter Southwest’s
offensive woes continued as Grimsley pushed the lead out to as many as 13 at 23-10.
Southwest used a small 10-4 run to end the half at 27-20. After the break Grimsley
scored the first bucket to put it at 29-22. Southwest scored two quick baskets to
make it 29-24, but the hosts left a man open in the corner for a 3 and it was back
up to 32-24. Once again Southwest put a couple baskets together and made it 32-28
and 34-30. But that was close as it ever got for the game. The Cowboys seemed to
playing in cement shoes all night and never was able to make it over the hump. The
Whirlies were up 49-38 after 3 quarters. The 4th quarter was more of the same, as
the Cowboys tried to get some traction but never could get the whole tread on the
ground as turnovers and horrendous shooting doomed them down the stretch. Grimsley
held on for a 65-52 victory and move on to the third round. Grimsley was lead by
Montrel Goldston with 20 points. Southwest ends it’s season lead by Terrell Leach
and LaKeith Scott. With 18 and 16 points respectively.

  1. Hey Jimmy, you may not have heard this latest news flash but sports is not based on “WHAT IF” scenarios. The winner is the team that puts the most points on the board at the end of the game with the players that are available. Grimsley also had players that were injured and did not play last night. If you were at the game, did you notice the kids on the Whirlie bench in street clothes?

In the immortal words of Dwight Howard…don’t bring that weak stuff into my lane. Because it won’t drop and you will end up eating it.

  2. Jordan Hanner for SWG out with the fractured hand/wrist…..He would have helped, but the Whirlies under the direction of Coach Darren Corbett are playing very smart basketball right now…You can’t say it is a particular Grimsley player getting it done, but can say Coach Corbett has done a heck of a job with this group of Whirlies all year long…

He lost four starters from last year’s team and has had injuries and grade issues to deal with this year late in the season and still has his team in the Sectional Final at WS Reagan on Friday night…..

A lot to be learned by following Coach Corbett and his program…..

  3. GRIMSLEY= most underappreciated basketball program in the triad. They get NO love from anybody, but hey they are the last local 4a boys team standing. Looking at grimsley the past 5 years they have made the playoffs every year, 2 sectional finals appearances, 2 conference titles including undefeated in 07-08. Little four champs, beat the breaks off of dudly twice this year. They lost a TON of talent. Just think about this team with the sweeny twins, christian hairston, and krechaun williams. Darren Corbett is the best coach in this area, and has proven that with consistent success since 2005 when keith manley and carter gourley joined the squad as freshmen as springboarded the program to the top of the metro. They may not have the best record but go to the game friday night and watch a TEAM that boasts no one over 6’3 give reagan all it wants and more. GO WHIRLIES, you have made the school proud

  4. Itotally concur with whirliebird, one heck of a job cosidering the competetion they have played against. LET’S GO WHIRLIES !!!!!
