GREENSBORO, N.C. – UNCG exploded for five runs in the first inning and got seven strong innings from Colby Hyatt as the Spartans claimed the series on Sunday by winning the rubber game, 10-3, over Cleveland State at the UNCG Baseball Stadium.

Hyatt picked up his first win for the Spartans (4-3) after allowing just four hits and three runs, one earned, in his seven innings of work. Cleveland State starter Nate Blankemeyer was credited with the loss after allowing five runs, three earned, on just two hits in two innings.

John Hein two-run triple in the contest for UNCG, while Trevor Edwards and Ray Quinones each went 1-3 at the plate with an RBI and two runs scored.

The Vikings (2-4) were led by Steve Mahler who had a pair of singles and a run scored and Zach Thompson and Tyler Wynn provided to lone RBI.

Cleveland State struck first in the top half of the first after loading the bases on a pair of singles and a Spartan error. Wynn then hit a sacrifice fly to deep center to allow the runner from third to score and give the Vikings a 1-0 lead.

That lead didn’t last long, though, as UNCG put up five runs in the bottom half of the inning thanks to a pair of Viking errors. Drew Gehringer led off with a walk and Chris Barker was hit by a pitch for the sixth time this season to put two runners on base. Quinones then reached as his sacrifice bunt attempt was dropped by the pitcher to load the bases.

Edwards followed with a single through the right side of the infield that scored Gehringer to tie the game at one. Eric Brindle then drew a eight-pitch walk to score Barker before Bobby Martin delivered an RBI single that scored Quinones to make it 3-1.

Joe Hager then hit a ball that the Viking second baseman couldn’t handle that allowed Edwards and Brindle to come home to give UNCG a 5-1 lead.

The Vikings responded immediately with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning to trim the Spartan lead to 5-3. Alex Gnezda led off with a single up the middle and Frank Dufour reached on a fielding error by UNCG to get things going. The Vikings would score later in the inning on a sacrifice fly and an throwing error by the Spartan shortstop to make it a two-run contest.

UNCG would add a run in the bottom of the third on a sacrifice fly to make it 6-3 and things would stay that way until the bottom of the sixth. Ray Crawford(Dudley High School) led off the inning with a single and Cambric Moye reached on an error. Hein plated Crawford and Moye with a blast to right center for a triple to put the Spartans ahead, 8-3.

An RBI double by Quinones and an RBI single by Andrew Spleth in the bottom of the eighth inning provided the final runs for UNCG and made it 10-3.

The Spartans return to the diamond on Tuesday as they hit the road for the first time all season at Wake Forest at 4 p.m.
